Rega RB880 Tonearm
The RB880 is Rega's high-performance standalone tonearm — the arm fitted as standard to the Planar 8 and the Planar 6 RS Edition, and available separately for those fitting or upgrading a compatible turntable. Rega describes its development as "fine tuning an icon": the company has been building tonearms since 1983, and the RB880 represents nearly 40 years of accumulated engineering brought to bear on a design that was already highly regarded.
The key changes from the arms below it in the range are focused on the components where performance margins are hardest-won: the vertical bearing housing, the bearing shaft and sleeve, and the mass distribution of the arm tube itself. These are not cosmetic revisions. The RB880 is designed for listeners who want to hear what a high-grade cartridge is genuinely capable of.
Where the RB880 Sits in the Rega Range
The RB880 sits above the RB330 and below the RB3000 in the Rega tonearm range.
The step up from the RB330 involves three specific changes. First, the vertical bearing housing is now machined from aluminium — a material that provides greater rigidity and better damping than the component it replaces. Second, the bearing sleeve and vertical bearing shaft are redesigned in stainless steel, adding precision and durability at the most mechanically critical point in the arm. Third, the arm tube features what Rega calls "intelligent redistribution of mass" — the tube's mass has been optimised through 3D analysis, so that stiffness is concentrated where it matters most and mass is minimised where it does not need to be.
The bearing assemblies are hand-matched: each set is selected to work together, rather than drawn from a tolerance range and assembled. This takes time but produces a more consistent result.
Above the RB880, the RB3000 raises precision further with interference-fit bearings and a construction that uses no adhesive at any point. That is a meaningful engineering step for listeners who want the last word in resolution. For most, the RB880 is where the Rega range delivers its most compelling combination of genuine high performance and value.
Sound and Performance
The RB880 retrieves more from a record than the arms below it in the range, and the mechanism is specific. Near friction-free movement in both planes allows the stylus to follow the groove as freely as the cartridge's suspension will allow — the arm is contributing as little resistance as possible. The hand-matched bearings ensure that freedom is consistent: there is no detectable play in either axis, and no detectable friction either.
What this translates to, in listening terms, is greater precision in the stereo image, better low-level resolution, and improved timing. The redistribution of mass in the arm tube reduces stored energy — mass that is not needed stores resonance and returns it to the signal path. By concentrating stiffness at the bearings and minimising mass along the tube, Rega has produced an arm that is both rigid and quiet.
The aluminium vertical bearing housing contributes in a related way: aluminium's damping properties help absorb resonances that might otherwise travel from the bearing assembly into the arm tube. The stainless steel sleeve and shaft add dimensional stability — stainless steel maintains its geometry more consistently than softer materials under varying conditions.
The character is recognisably Rega — rhythmically direct and tonally honest — but at a level of resolution that will suit listeners running the Rega Nd9 or moving coil cartridges such as the Ania Pro. The RB880 will not restrict those cartridges. It will let them work.
Build Quality and Design
The RB880 is hand-assembled at Rega's factory in Southend-on-Sea. The arm includes an integrated arm clip and improved spring housing — details that contribute to reliable day-to-day use. The bearing assemblies are hand-matched and fitted with Rega's low-capacitance phono cables, terminated with quality phono connectors.
The construction reflects the care taken in the engineering. This is an arm that repays careful cartridge mounting and correct setup; once properly fitted, it should give many years of consistent performance, backed by Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
Connectivity and System Matching
The RB880 uses Rega's standard three-point mounting with a 222mm pivot-to-spindle distance. It is the standard arm on the Planar 8 and Planar 6 RS Edition, and is compatible with any Rega-mount turntable built to that specification. For listeners fitting the RB880 to a non-Rega turntable, confirm compatibility before ordering — the three-point hole pattern and pivot-to-spindle distance must be correct.
At this level, cartridge choice becomes more important. The Rega Nd9 moving magnet cartridge is the natural match and is factory-fitted to the Planar 8 as an option. For those moving to moving coil, the RB880 is capable enough to warrant it — the Ania Pro MC is the appropriate step at this level of the range.
For a phono stage, the Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the logical pairing for MC users. For listeners staying with moving magnet, the Rega Fono MM MK5 remains a capable choice, though at RB880 level a better phono stage will be audible. Dave or Chris can advise on what makes sense at your budget.

Who Is It For?
The RB880 is for the serious vinyl listener who wants a high-performance tonearm capable of resolving what a quality cartridge offers, without stepping into reference territory. It is the right arm for Planar 8 owners, for those upgrading a Planar 6 or RS Edition, and for listeners fitting a performance arm to a compatible third-party deck. Those running the Nd9 or an MC cartridge will find the RB880 properly matched. For the listener who wants to go further, the RB3000 is the next step.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The RB880 is available to order through our Norwich showroom; call ahead and Dave or Chris will advise on cartridge matching and compatibility with your turntable. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to experienced hi-fi specialists who can help you decide whether the RB880 or an arm further up the range is the right fit for your system.
