Rega RB330 Tonearm

The RB330 is Rega's mid-range standalone tonearm and the standard arm on the Planar 3 — the turntable at which the majority of serious vinyl listeners begin. It was designed using 3D CAD and CAM technology, bringing more than 35 years of tonearm design experience to bear on every aspect of the arm's construction: ergonomics, bearing geometry, bias control, and cable quality. Available separately, it is also the natural upgrade choice for listeners fitting a better arm to a Rega-mount turntable.

The result of that design process is a tonearm that achieves near-frictionless movement horizontally and vertically — not as a claim, but as an engineering outcome. Rega designed the RB330's bearing housings to tighter tolerances than its predecessor, with the stiffness of the vertical bearing housing treated as a performance variable, not a secondary concern. A stiffer housing resists the flex that can return energy into the arm, and that matters at the level of resolution the RB330 is designed to deliver.

Where the RB330 Sits in the Rega Range

The RB330 sits above the RB220 and below the RB880 in the five-arm Rega tonearm range.

The step up from the RB220 is significant. The vertical bearing housing is redesigned for greater stiffness, the bias assembly is new, and the phono cable is Rega-manufactured with Neutrik RCA connectors — a meaningful improvement over a generic cable at this end of the market. The 100g mild steel balance weight is also new, designed for better mass distribution. These changes matter to listeners running cartridges from the Nd5 upwards, where bearing quality starts to be the limiting factor.

Above the RB330 sits the RB880, which introduces an aluminium vertical bearing housing, a redesigned stainless steel bearing shaft, and hand-matched bearing assemblies. The step to the RB880 is the right one for listeners who want to hear the full capability of a high-grade cartridge. For Planar 3 users and those with equivalent turntables, the RB330 is correctly matched and will not be the limiting factor in a well-balanced system.

Sound and Performance

The RB330 was conceived as the tonearm that would close the gap between mid-range expectation and high-performance delivery. Its 3D CAD design allowed Rega's engineers to model stress and resonance behaviour before a prototype was ever machined — every decision about wall thickness, housing geometry, and mass distribution was informed by simulation as well as experience.

In practice, the near-frictionless bearing movement means the stylus is doing the work, not fighting the arm. Groove modulations — including the small ones that carry ambience, low-level detail, and fine transient information — are tracked rather than approximated. The stiffened vertical bearing housing resists the micro-deflections that can smear timing and reduce stereo image precision.

The Rega low-capacitance phono cable with Neutrik plugs is a meaningful contribution. At this price point, the cable between arm and phono stage is often the weakest element; Rega's own cable, designed for their arms and terminated with quality connectors, removes that vulnerability. The 100g mild steel balance weight tracks the record at the correct vertical tracking angle, maintaining consistent stylus pressure across the groove.

The character of the RB330 is the Rega character: rhythmically assured, tonally direct, and with a low noise floor that lets music emerge cleanly from silence. It handles the full range of records — from quiet classical passages to loud rock — without compressing or exaggerating either end.

Build Quality and Design

The RB330 is hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea. The integrated arm clip — new in this design — secures the arm during transport and handling, an ergonomic improvement that matters in daily use. The improved spring housing holds the bias assembly more consistently, contributing to the stability of tracking across the record.

Finish is clean and functional. The arm ships ready for Rega's standard three-point mount. As with all Rega arms, careful handling during cartridge mounting is important: the precision of the bearing assembly is the reason the arm performs as it does, and it should be treated accordingly.

Connectivity and System Matching

The RB330 uses Rega's standard three-point mounting with a 222mm pivot-to-spindle distance. It fits Rega's Planar 3 as standard equipment and is compatible with any turntable built to the same specification. Confirm compatibility before ordering the arm for a non-Rega turntable — the three-point hole pattern and spindle distance must match.

Cartridge matching at this level works best with Rega's moving magnet range at the Nd5 and Nd7 level, both designed for Rega arms and factory-aligned. The Nd7 in particular is worth considering: the RB330's bearing quality is capable of resolving what that cartridge offers. For those considering a move to moving coil, the arm will accept a compatible MC cartridge, though the phono stage must be matched accordingly.

For a phono stage, the Rega Fono MM MK5 is the natural MM partner at this level. For those running an MC cartridge, the Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the step up worth considering. Both are designed by the same team that built the arm.

Who Is It For?

The RB330 is for the listener running a Planar 3 or a comparable Rega-mount turntable, and for those upgrading from an entry-level arm to something genuinely capable. It is correctly matched to mid-range moving magnet cartridges and will not limit an Nd5 or Nd7. Listeners who have moved to a high-grade moving coil, or who have a Planar 8 or above, should be looking at the RB880.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The RB330 is available to order through our Norwich showroom; call ahead and Dave or Chris will talk you through cartridge and phono stage matching for your turntable. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to experienced hi-fi specialists who can advise on whether the RB330 or a step further up the range is the right choice for your system.

Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
