Rega AOS MC Phono Stage | Moving Coil Preamplifier
Reference Aura MC circuit lineage. Half-width aluminium case. Fully analogue, no-compromise moving coil amplification — factory pre-set for Rega MC cartridges.
The Rega AOS MC phono stage occupies a considered position in Rega's range: immediately above the Fono MC and drawing its circuit design directly from the reference-class Rega Aura MC, one of the most respected moving coil preamplifiers Rega has produced. The AOS brings that engineering philosophy — the same attention to signal purity, the same circuit priorities — into a compact, custom half-width aluminium case, making it a practical and sonically capable choice for serious analogue systems. As an authorised Rega dealer serving Norwich and Norfolk for over 50 years, Martins Hi-Fi can demonstrate the AOS in the context of a complete system and advise on the ideal Rega MC cartridge pairing for your turntable. Key Features
- Circuit design based directly on the Rega Aura MC reference phono stage — the engineering philosophy, component selection and sonic priorities of Rega's flagship moving coil preamplifier are present throughout the AOS.
- Fully analogue, two-stage amplification with no digital control circuitry anywhere in the signal path; the all-aluminium enclosure actively screens the circuit from stray RFI interference.
- Parallel-connected, ultra-low noise FET transistors, carefully graded and matched, form the first amplification stage — their configuration ensures no bias current flows through the cartridge coil, preserving the delicate magnetic geometry of a fine MC cartridge.
- Adjustable resistive loading from 70Ω to 400Ω and capacitive loading of 1000 pF or 4300 pF, with 6 dB gain adjustment via the rear panel — factory pre-set for all Rega MC cartridges, with sufficient flexibility for a wide range of third-party moving coil designs.
- RIAA accuracy of better than ±0.2 dB from 65 Hz to 70 kHz, achieved through a two-stage circuit architecture that divides high-frequency passive equalisation and low-frequency active equalisation between dedicated, symmetrical Class A stages.
- Self-adjusting servo control compensates automatically for variations in ambient and operating temperature, maintaining consistent performance regardless of warm-up state.
- Automatic standby function reduces power draw to 0.4W after a period of inactivity, with the option to deactivate via rear-panel dip switches for those who prefer the unit to remain active.
- Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects — Rega's statement of confidence in their own engineering and long-term commitment to every product that leaves their Southend-on-Sea factory.
Technology & Design
The AOS is built around Rega's conviction that signal purity begins with restraint: nothing in the circuit that does not earn its place, and nothing between the cartridge and the output that introduces avoidable degradation. The first stage uses parallel-connected Linear Systems ultra-low noise FET transistors configured as a compound pair. This arrangement avoids coupling components between the cartridge output and the input transistors — components that Rega regard as inherently detrimental to sound quality. The first stage drives the passive high-frequency portion of the RIAA equalisation network, while the second stage — a symmetrical Class A differential amplifier with common base driver — handles the active low-frequency section. The result is a phono stage with a frequency response extending to 100 kHz (–0.2 dB) and THD of just 0.03%, housed in a custom half-width aluminium case that sits neatly alongside full-width components or on a dedicated equipment shelf.
Listening Experience
The AOS rewards those who have invested seriously in their source. Paired with the Rega Ania MC, the Ania Pro or the Aphelion 2, it presents the musical signal with a directness and composure that reflects its Aura lineage. Rhythm and timing are well served — recordings that should feel propulsive do so without artificial sharpening — while low-level detail emerges from a quiet background without the need to lean in. Tonal balance is even-handed across the frequency range, with neither a forward midrange nor a flattered top end. It is a phono stage that gets out of the way of the music, which is precisely what Rega intends. For those building or refining a system around a Rega Planar 6, Planar 8 or Planar 10, the AOS represents a natural and well-matched step forward from the Fono MC.
