Rega Aphelion 2 | Reference MC Cartridge
The Aphelion 2 is Rega's reference moving coil cartridge, sitting at the top of the Rega MC range. Every element of the design has been reconsidered and rebuilt to tighter tolerances than the original Aphelion — the body, cantilever, stylus, generator and coil winding are all specified without concession to cost. The result is the ceiling of what the Rega MC design philosophy can deliver.
Where the Aphelion 2 Sits in the Rega Range
The Aphelion 2 is the reference and the top of the Rega MC range, sitting above the Ania Pro. It is factory-fitted to the Rega Naia and is available with the Planar 10 at certain configurations. The step from the Ania Pro to the Aphelion 2 is not incremental — it is a move to a fundamentally different tier of construction and materials.
The Iron Micro Cross Generator
The iron micro cross generator at the heart of the Aphelion 2 is 50% smaller than the one used in the original Aphelion. Reducing the size of the moving generator assembly directly reduces its mass and inertia, allowing the coil to follow rapid stylus movements with less dynamic compression. The coil itself is wound from 0.018mm wire — among the finest used in cartridge production anywhere in the world. All winding is performed by hand at Rega's Southend-on-Sea facility.
Boron Cantilever
The cantilever is boron — the same material used in Rega's Nd9 moving magnet cartridge, chosen for its exceptional stiffness-to-mass ratio. Boron's first resonance frequency lies far above the audio band, which means the cantilever behaves as a mechanically rigid transmission rod at audio frequencies rather than contributing its own resonant colouration to the signal. Aluminium cantilevers — used in the Ania and Ania Pro — have a measurable flexural resonance within or near the audio band; the boron rod in the Aphelion 2 does not. The practical result is a more neutral, more accurate retrieval of the musical information in the groove.
Fine Line Nude Diamond Stylus
The stylus is a fine line nude diamond. The fine line profile traces the finest groove modulations with greater precision than the Vital profile used in other Rega cartridges, particularly at high frequencies and on the inner grooves of heavily modulated records. Its smaller radial contact patch reduces drag on the groove wall, lowering distortion and preserving tracing accuracy further into the record — the final tracks of a side sound as clean as the first.
Machined Aluminium Body
The body is no longer moulded PPS but a zero-tolerance machined aluminium billet, black anodised. It is held to dimensional specifications that injection moulding cannot achieve consistently — tighter tolerances mean more consistent alignment of all generator components relative to the stylus, more repeatable stylus geometry, and a more rigid interface between the cartridge body and the tonearm headshell. A CAD-designed clear rigid cover protects the internal fine wiring during fitting, reducing the risk of damage at the most vulnerable point in the installation process.
Connectivity and System Matching
The Aphelion 2 uses Rega's three-point mounting system, designed for the RB880 and RB3000 tonearms as fitted to the Naia and Planar 10. At approximately 350μV output and 1.9g tracking force, it requires an MC-capable phono stage. The Rega Fono MC MK4 is a capable entry point at this level; a high-quality dedicated external MC stage will allow the Aphelion 2 to operate at its full potential. For precise setup, the Rega Atlas Tracking Force Gauge is the recommended tool for setting the 1.9g tracking force correctly.

Who Is It For?
The Aphelion 2 is for the listener running a Rega Naia, Planar 10, or equivalent reference-level turntable who wants the ceiling of Rega MC performance — and who has a phono stage and system capable of resolving what the boron cantilever and fine line nude diamond make available. Rega built both the Naia and the Aphelion 2 around the same design philosophy, and the combination is the intended reference system. Those not yet at Naia or Planar 10 level should consider the Ania Pro.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. The Rega range has been part of what we do for years — we know these products well and can advise on the complete system context for the Aphelion 2, from tonearm compatibility to phono stage matching. At this level, the conversation matters. Dave or Chris can help.
