Rega Planar 8 Turntable
The Planar 8 occupies the point in the Rega range at which the turntable ceases to be the limiting factor in most analogue systems. It was developed directly from Rega's Naiad reference turntable — a cost-no-object test bed used to push the limits of what is possible in vinyl replay — and transfers that thinking into a production deck at a price that makes it genuinely attainable.
The central improvement over the Planar 6 is the RB880 tonearm: a precision arm whose bearing assembly is adjusted to less than 1/1000th of a millimetre. At this level of tolerance, the arm tracks the groove with a sensitivity that lower-specification arms do not reach.
Where the Planar 8 Sits in the Rega Range
The Planar 8 sits above the Planar 6 and below the Rega Naia in the Rega range.
The step up from the Planar 6 brings three meaningful changes: the RB880 replaces the RB330, the triple-layer glass platter replaces the dual-layer, and the plinth is refined further — 30% lighter than the RP8 it replaces, with the same Tancast 8 core. Each contributes to a more capable and more revealing turntable.
The Naia above it takes a fundamentally different approach to the plinth — graphene-impregnated carbon fibre over a Tancast 8 core — with the RB Titanium tonearm and ceramic platter. The gap between the Planar 6 and Planar 8 is arguably greater value for money than the gap between the Planar 8 and the Naia.
Sound and Performance
The RB880 is the most important change. Its zero-tolerance bearing assembly — adjusted to less than 1/1000th of a millimetre — moves with a freedom from friction that the RB330 does not approach. The tonearm's job is to hold the cartridge steady in three dimensions while allowing it to follow the groove precisely; at RB880 tolerances, it does this with an accuracy that the cartridge can fully exploit.
The triple-layer glass platter adds mass — and places it where it is most effective, concentrated at the outer rim for a stronger flywheel effect. This delivers greater rotational stability and a platter that resists speed variations more effectively. Combined with the Neo PSU's DSP-controlled 24V output, the Planar 8 holds speed to a level of precision that is audible in the way music is timed and in the solidity of low-frequency information.
The Tancast 8 plinth — lighter than its predecessor by 30% while more rigid — continues to do what the Planar 6 introduced: removing the plinth itself from the equation, letting the tonearm and cartridge work without interference from stored and re-released energy. At Planar 8 level, this foundation allows the RB880 and a quality cartridge to reveal what a well-pressed record actually contains.
Build Quality and Design
The Planar 8 is hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea and weighs 4.2 kg — lighter than the Planar 6 at 5.2 kg, owing to the refined Tancast 8 plinth. The HPL finish is available in Matt Polaris Grey and Matt White.
The Neo PSU is external, compact at 180 × 50 × 155 mm and 0.6 kg, connecting via Mini DIN. The turntable dimensions with dustcover are 420 × 125 × 315 mm.
The Planar 8 is available factory-fitted with a choice of cartridges: Nd7 MM, Nd9 MM, Ania Pro MC, or Apheta 3 MC — all aligned at the factory in Southend-on-Sea. Lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects.
Connectivity and System Matching
The Planar 8 outputs a standard stereo RCA signal. Cartridge type determines phono stage requirements. The Nd7 and Nd9 are moving magnet cartridges; the Ania Pro and Apheta 3 are moving coil and require an MC-capable phono stage.
At Planar 8 level, the phono stage choice matters considerably. The Rega AOS MC Phono Stage — based directly on Rega's reference Aura circuit — is the natural partner for those running an MC cartridge. Its adjustable gain and loading accommodate all typical low-output MC designs, and it is factory pre-set for Rega MC cartridges. For MM cartridge users, a high-quality dedicated MM stage is recommended over an amplifier's built-in phono input at this level.
We are happy to advise on cartridge and phono stage combinations — the choice has a significant effect on what the Planar 8 ultimately delivers.

Who Is It For?
The Planar 8 is for the committed vinyl listener who wants a turntable that will not limit what a quality cartridge and phono stage can reveal. It suits those who have heard the Planar 6 and want more, and those who are building a long-term analogue system from the source upward. It is not a casual purchase — it rewards proper system matching and will expose weaknesses elsewhere in the chain.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The Planar 8 is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a system that makes sense for your budget. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can talk you through whether the Planar 8 or another model in the Rega range is the right fit for your room and your system.
Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
