Rega Ania Moving Coil Cartridge

The Ania is Rega's entry moving coil cartridge — and the point in the Rega range where the fundamental technology of cartridge design changes. The Nd MM cartridges work by moving a permanent magnet past a fixed coil arrangement; the Ania reverses this. A tiny hand-wound coil assembly moves within the fixed field of a neodymium magnet. The mass of what moves drops dramatically — from the relatively substantial magnet structure of a moving magnet cartridge to a micro coil assembly that weighs almost nothing. Lower moving mass means faster response to rapid groove modulations, and faster response means greater resolution of fine musical detail that a MM cartridge handles less precisely.

The practical consequence of this design is low output voltage. Where the Nd MM cartridges produce 5–6mV, the Ania produces approximately 350μV — around fifteen times less. That voltage requires amplification from an MC-capable phono stage before it reaches the main amplifier. This is the fundamental practical distinction between moving magnet and moving coil ownership: not just a cartridge choice, but a phono stage choice. An MM-only phono stage will not do.

Where the Ania Sits in the Rega Range

The Ania is the entry point of the Rega MC range, sitting immediately above the Nd9 in the Rega range and below the Ania Pro.

The choice between the Nd9 and the Ania is the most considered cartridge decision in the range. The Nd9 is Rega's reference MM — boron cantilever, monocrystalline fine line diamond, high output, and compatibility with any MM phono stage including those built into most integrated amplifiers. The Ania introduces a fundamentally different generator technology and far lower output that requires dedicated MC amplification. It is not automatically the better choice; it is a different choice, with different system implications. In a system where the phono stage is already MC-capable — or where the listener is investing in one specifically — the Ania's MC generator brings a character and resolution that a MM cartridge cannot replicate.

Above the Ania, the Ania Pro upgrades the stylus profile from an elliptical cut to the Vital profile nude diamond. The generator architecture is essentially the same; what changes is the precision with which the stylus reads the groove. For those who want MC performance with more resolving groove contact, the Ania Pro is the natural next step.

Sound and Performance

The sonic advantage of a moving coil cartridge over moving magnet is rooted in moving mass. The Ania's hand-wound micro coil assembly — mounted on an iron micro cross that forms the magnetic circuit core — is a fraction of the weight of the magnet structure in a moving magnet cartridge. When the stylus tracks a groove modulation, the coil must follow it immediately and accurately; any inertia in the moving assembly introduces a lag that smears transients and loses fine detail. The Ania's extremely low-mass coil assembly allows it to follow rapid groove modulations with less dynamic compression than a MM design can achieve.

The result is a presentation that experienced listeners associate with moving coil: better definition of individual instruments within a complex mix, cleaner separation of detail at low listening levels, and a slightly more immediate and direct character than the smoother sound of a high-quality MM. These are differences of degree rather than kind at the entry MC level — the Nd9 is a genuinely capable cartridge and the gap between them is not enormous — but in a well-matched system, the distinction is real and audible.

The super high-powered neodymium magnet maximises the output from the micro coil assembly, extracting as much signal as the design allows. The iron micro cross acts as the magnetic circuit core, concentrating the field through which the coil moves.

The CAD-designed rigid protective cover that ships over the cartridge body serves a practical purpose: the internal fine wiring of the coil assembly is the most vulnerable element during fitting, and the cover reduces the risk of damage at the most critical point in the installation process.

Build Quality and Design

The Ania is housed in a glass-filled PPS body — the same rigid engineering polymer used throughout the Nd MM range, chosen for its dimensional stability and low mass. The CAD-designed clear rigid cover protects the internal wiring during installation.

All Ania cartridges are handmade at Rega's Southend-on-Sea facility. The micro coil winding is performed by skilled technicians — this is not a process that can be automated at the precision levels required for a cartridge assembly. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

Connectivity and System Matching

The Ania uses Rega's three-point mounting system, fitting the RB220 upwards. At approximately 350μV output and 1.75g tracking force, it requires an MC-capable phono stage. The Rega Fono MC MK4 is the dedicated Rega standalone option; the MC input stages in the Elicit MK5 and Aethos will also drive the Ania well. An MM-only phono stage will not provide adequate gain.

The natural turntable partners are the Planar 3 upwards. The Ania's MC advantage becomes most relevant in a turntable and tonearm combination that can resolve it; pairing it with a Planar 1 or Planar 2 is technically possible but leaves its capabilities underserved. Dave or Chris at Martin's can advise on whether the Ania or the Nd9 is the right choice given your current phono stage and turntable.

Who Is It For?

The Ania is for the listener ready to move from moving magnet to moving coil — either because the system already has an MC-capable phono stage, or because the step to MC is a deliberate part of an upgrade decision. It is the most accessible entry into the Rega MC range, and the natural first step for those running a Planar 3 or above who want to experience what MC performance offers. Those committed to MM performance should look at the Nd9; those wanting more resolving groove contact within the MC range should look at the Ania Pro.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

Dave or Chris can advise on whether the Ania is the right step for your system, and on which MC phono stage makes sense at your level. Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
