Rega Fono MC MK4 | Moving Coil Phono Stage | Martins Hi-Fi

Unlock the full potential of your moving coil cartridge.

The Rega Fono MC MK4 is an exceptionally high-quality dedicated moving coil phono stage, designed to maximise the performance of any low-output MC cartridge. Developed from the circuit work carried out on Rega's highly regarded Aria phono amplifier, it brings serious MC amplification to a compact, beautifully finished package — at a price that represents outstanding value for the performance on offer.

Hi-Fi Choice awarded it Group Test Winner and called it an outstanding affordable MC phono stage that delivers superb performance. The Ear awarded it Best Buy. Whether you're pairing it with a Rega MC cartridge or a quality third-party low-output MC, the Fono MC MK4 has the adjustability and engineering pedigree to do it full justice.

Features & Benefits

All-Discrete Low-Noise Input Stage

The Fono MC MK4's input stage is built around the Linear Systems LSK389 low-noise FET — a carefully chosen component that is critical to getting the best from a moving coil cartridge. Because of the high input impedance of the FET, the loading effects of the amplifier circuit are minuscule and do not affect the performance of the cartridge. The result is an input stage with exceptional noise performance and linearity, revealing the full detail and dynamic range that a good MC cartridge is capable of. Explore our full range of MC cartridges to find the ideal partner.

MUSE Operational Amplifier for RIAA Equalisation

A MUSE operational amplifier handles the RIAA equalisation stage, with polypropylene capacitors used throughout both the signal path and the RIAA equalisation circuits. Polypropylene capacitors are chosen for their sonic neutrality and stability — a detail that speaks to the care Rega has taken throughout this design. RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2dB from 100Hz to 100kHz, ensuring faithful reproduction of the vinyl groove's recorded content.

Full Adjustability via Rear-Panel DIP Switches

Despite its compact footprint, the Fono MC MK4 offers comprehensive adjustability via DIP switches conveniently located on the rear panel — no need to open the casework or send it away for modification. Available settings include:

  • Input loading resistance: 400Ω, 100Ω, 150Ω, or 70Ω
  • Input loading capacitance: 1000pF or 4300pF
  • Gain: 63.5dB or 69.5dB

This makes the Fono MC MK4 compatible with a wide range of third-party low-output MC cartridges, well beyond the Rega range. Factory default settings are optimised for all current Rega MC models — so if you're pairing it with a Rega Ania, Ania Pro, Apheta 3, or Aphelion 2, it's ready to go straight out of the box. Factory settings are: 100Ω impedance, 1000pF capacitance, high gain setting.

Developed from the Aria Phono Amplifier

The Fono MC MK4's circuit is a direct descendant of the development work carried out on Rega's acclaimed Aria phono amplifier — a much more expensive unit. This lineage is clearly audible: the Fono MC MK4 delivers a level of transparency, detail, and musical engagement that consistently surprises listeners at its price point.

New Aluminium Casework

The Fono MC MK4 is housed in a newly designed aluminium case that matches the Rega Fono MM MK5 and Neo MK2 PSU, giving a cohesive, modern aesthetic that integrates naturally into any system. It is a compact unit — tidy on the shelf and unobtrusive in any rack or equipment setup. Browse our full phono stage collection to compare options.

The Natural Partner for Rega MC Cartridges

The Fono MC MK4 has been designed specifically with Rega's moving coil cartridge range in mind. Paired with a Rega Ania on a Planar 3 or higher, or an Apheta 3 on a Planar 6, Planar 8, or Planar 10, it represents a cohesive, synergistic upgrade step that makes a clearly audible difference. Speak to our team about the ideal cartridge and phono stage combination for your turntable and system.

Lifetime Warranty

The Fono MC MK4 carries Rega's lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects — consistent with every product Rega makes in their Southend-on-Sea factory. Learn more about the full Rega range on our hi-fi brands page.
