Rega Aethos Integrated Amplifier

The Aethos is Rega's reference integrated amplifier — the point in the range where Rega stops building amplifiers that do everything and starts building amplifiers that do one thing exceptionally well. There is no MM phono stage in the Aethos. There is no DAC, no digital input, no headphone socket driven by a secondary circuit. What the Aethos does is amplify an analogue signal with the best circuits Rega can design for that purpose in an integrated form, and it does it at 125 watts per channel into 8 ohms.

The decision to exclude phono and digital inputs is a deliberate engineering choice, not an oversight. Including those circuits requires compromises in power supply allocation, board layout, and shielding that affect the quality of the main amplifier circuits. At Aethos level, Rega believes those compromises are not acceptable. The listener at this price point is expected to have — or to invest in — dedicated external sources.

Where the Aethos Sits in the Rega Range

The Aethos sits above the Elicit MK5 and below the Osiris in the Rega amplifier range.

The step up from the Elicit MK5 is not primarily about power — the Elicit delivers 105 watts and the Aethos 125 watts, a difference that is real but not the main event. The step is about architecture. The Aethos moves to a full dual mono design: one custom-wound toroidal transformer with regulated supplies, one power amplifier stage, and a pre-amplifier section running entirely in class A — each for each channel, independently. Dual mono means the two channels are electrically isolated; there is no shared power rail, no mutual interference, and no common-mode noise between channels.

The Aethos also introduces four 160-watt 16-amp output transistors per channel (versus a smaller complement in the Elicit), K-Power reservoir capacitors — Rega's own high-specification capacitors for power supply storage — and polypropylene capacitors throughout the signal path. These are not incremental improvements; they are changes in approach.

Above the Aethos, the Osiris raises power to 162 watts, moves to a passive pre-amplifier topology with passive volume control, uses dual 400VA toroidal transformers, and adds a balanced XLR input. The Osiris is a reference-level statement; the Aethos is the reference performance that most listeners will ever need.

Sound and Performance

The class-A pre-amplifier section is the Aethos's most audible characteristic. Class A operation means the gain stage is always conducting — it never switches off and back on during the audio cycle, as push-pull class B stages do. The result is a pre-amplifier that is inherently more linear: there is no crossover distortion, no switching artefact, and no discontinuity in its behaviour at any listening level.

The fully discrete FET-based line amplifier in the pre section compounds this. FET gain stages have a lower noise floor than bipolar equivalents and a more linear transfer characteristic; combined with class-A operation, they produce a pre-amplifier that adds very little of itself to the signal.

The power amplifier — 125 watts from four Sanken output transistors per channel — has the current delivery to drive speakers that would challenge smaller amplifiers. At 156 watts into 6 ohms, the Aethos does not contract when speaker impedance dips; it maintains dynamics. The K-Power reservoir capacitors store the energy reserves that sustain those dynamics on musical transients, and the custom toroidal transformer with regulated supplies keeps the power quality consistent regardless of draw.

What this produces, in listening terms, is an amplifier with a very low noise floor, excellent image stability, and the dynamic authority that comes from a properly designed power supply and output stage. The Rega house character — rhythmically direct, tonally honest — is expressed here at a level of resolution that reveals what high-quality sources are genuinely capable of.

Build Quality and Design

The Aethos is hand-assembled in Rega's Southend-on-Sea facility. At 17.5kg — nearly four times the weight of the Brio — its mass reflects the custom toroidal transformer, the substantial capacitor bank, and the quality of its internal construction. The 433 × 95 × 360mm chassis is a full-width unit, appropriate for the components inside.

The Solaris system remote is included. The headphone socket uses an output mute relay that cuts the speaker terminals when a headphone is connected — a thoughtful implementation that protects both the headphone driver and prevents accidental speaker output. Polypropylene capacitors are used throughout the signal path; K-Power reservoir capacitors are in the power supply.

Switchable direct input and pre-amplifier output allow the Aethos to function within a larger system — driving a power amplifier, or accepting a bypass signal for home cinema integration. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.

Connectivity and System Matching

The Aethos provides five line-level RCA inputs, a direct input, a switchable pre-amplifier output, a record output, and a front-panel headphone socket. There is no phono stage and no digital input.

This means the source chain must include a dedicated phono stage for vinyl — the Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the natural partner, a reference-circuit MC stage that is designed to match the Aethos's performance level. A standalone DAC or streaming device occupies one of the five line inputs for digital sources.

The natural turntable partner is the Rega Planar 8 or Planar 10 via the AOS MC phono stage. At this level, the phono stage is not a secondary consideration — it is as important as the amplifier itself, and the AOS MC is designed with that in mind.

Speaker matching at 125 watts is broad. The Aethos will drive virtually any passive loudspeaker effectively — its current delivery and regulated supply handle difficult loads well. Dave or Chris at Martin's can advise on specific pairings; at this level, a listening session in the showroom before committing is strongly recommended.

Who Is It For?

The Aethos is for the serious music listener who has moved beyond all-in-one amplification — who has a dedicated phono stage, an external DAC or streamer, and speakers capable of resolving what the Aethos offers. It is the right amplifier for a Planar 8 or Planar 10 owner who wants the electronics to match the source. Listeners who still need a built-in phono stage and DAC should look at the Elicit MK5; those who want the reference statement should look at the Osiris.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Aethos is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a proper source and speakers so you can hear what the class-A pre-amplifier section genuinely contributes. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can advise on phono stage matching, speaker pairing, and whether the Aethos or the Osiris is the right choice for your system.

Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
