For those who take their vinyl seriously, the Planar 6 represents a genuinely significant step up. It combines aerospace-derived materials, a hand-tuned 24V motor, and the sophistication of the Neo PSU — a power supply previously the preserve of the flagship Planar 10 — into a turntable that punches well above its price point. This is Rega at their disciplined, obsessive best.

A Plinth That Gets Out of the Way of the Music

The Foundation of Everything

The Planar 6 introduces Rega's first use of Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core in a plinth — a material originally developed for the aerospace industry, chosen here for the same reason it's trusted at altitude: it is exceptionally light and extraordinarily rigid. Sandwiched between layers of HPL (high pressure laminate), the result is a plinth that is physically stiff enough to resist unwanted resonance, yet light enough to avoid storing and re-releasing energy back into the stylus.

What this means in practice is a quieter background, greater separation between instruments, and a more focused, stable soundstage. The engineering is invisible; the benefit is entirely audible. The finish — Polaris matt grey with a high-gloss polymer black edge trim — is equally considered, looking every bit as purposeful as it sounds.

Neo PSU — Precision Power, Borrowed from the Flagship

The Planar 10's Secret Weapon, Now in the Planar 6

The Neo PSU is one of the most significant inclusions at this price point in any turntable available today. Originally developed for the Planar 10, it uses the same DSP (digital signal processing) generator built around a high-stability crystal oscillator to produce the exact frequency needed to rotate the platter at precisely 33⅓ or 45 RPM.

Rather than relying on the mains supply — which is subject to fluctuation, noise, and inconsistency — the Neo PSU generates a 24V AC balanced signal with less than 0.15% distortion. The motor receives a near-perfect sinusoidal waveform, regardless of what the mains is doing at any given moment. The practical upside for the listener is a motor that runs with exceptional consistency, contributing to stable pitch, reduced wow and flutter, and a more natural, composed presentation across all music. Electronic speed change and user-adjustable fine speed trimming are both included — features that, until now, were the exclusive domain of Rega's top-of-the-range model.

The Mechanical Heart of the Planar 6

At the core of the Planar 6 is a 24V motor that is individually hand-tuned and matched to its dedicated Neo PSU and custom drive pulley. Rega's approach here reflects a philosophy shared across their entire range: careful, considered matching of components rather than off-the-shelf assembly. The upgrade drive belt is fitted as standard — not as an optional extra.

Complementing this is a single-piece, machined aluminium sub-platter. By machining this component from a single billet of aluminium, Rega eliminates the tolerance variations and potential weak points that come with multi-part assemblies. The result is improved bearing consistency, smoother rotation, and a more stable platform for the record itself — all of which contribute to the Planar 6's ability to retrieve fine low-level detail with composure.

All cartridges are factory-fitted and aligned at the Rega factory in Southend-on-Sea, ensuring the optimum set-up from the moment the turntable leaves the box.
