Rega Planar 6 RS Edition
The Planar 6, reimagined — Rega's most compelling mid-range turntable arrives with a performance package drawn directly from the Planar 8.
Pics for illustration only.
If the letters RS mean anything to you — and if you are of a certain age, they almost certainly do — then you will understand immediately what Rega intends with this designation. As Ford's RS badge signified something faster, sharper, and more focused than the standard car it adorned, Rega's RS suffix marks a turntable that has been carefully elevated beyond its already capable standard specification. Following the warmly received Planar 3 RS Edition, Rega Research Ltd now applies the same philosophy to the Planar 6. The result is a turntable that arrives at an accessible price point whilst drawing its core components from considerably higher up the Rega range. Key Features
- RB880 tonearm — the same precision arm fitted as standard to the Rega Planar 8, with its preloaded zero-tolerance bearing assembly adjusted to less than 1/1000th of a millimetre
- Nd9 moving magnet cartridge factory-fitted — Rega's high-specification MM design, hand-wound in-house at their Southend-on-Sea facility
- Tancast 8 polyurethane foam core plinth — the same aerospace-derived material used in the Planar 8 and Planar 10, sandwiched between HPL (high pressure laminate) skins for exceptional rigidity at minimal mass
- Neo PSU included — electronic speed change, advanced anti-vibration control, and fine speed adjustment derived from Planar 10 DSP technology
- Limited RS Edition — a special build from Rega Research Ltd, UK, continuing the RS series launched with the Planar 3 RS
- Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects
Technology & Upgrades
The Planar 6 RS Edition's most significant distinction from the standard Planar 6 is the fitment of the RB880 tonearm. In standard specification, the Planar 6 carries the RB330 — a fine arm by any measure. The RB880, however, is a different proposition: a tonearm designed for the Planar 8 and sharing much of its engineering with the RB3000 fitted to the Planar 10. Its improved vertical bearing assembly, constructed from aluminium and stainless steel, and its preloaded zero-tolerance bearing geometry represent a meaningful step up in resolution and tracking composure.
The Nd9 moving magnet cartridge completes the picture at the stylus end. Like all Rega's Nd-series cartridges, the Nd9 is hand-made in Southend-on-Sea, wound with 38-micron wire to produce a low-inductance, low-impedance generator with improved high-frequency response and superior channel balance. Paired with the RB880, it forms a cartridge-and-arm combination that would be the envy of turntables at considerably higher prices.
The plinth, Neo PSU, and precision main bearing are carried over from the established Planar 6 platform — components that have long been regarded as among the most capable at this price point in the analogue world.
Listening Experience
What the RB880 and Nd9 combination brings to the Planar 6 RS is a heightened sense of composure and information retrieval. Timing — always a Rega strength — feels more assured, with musical lines tracking naturally without artificial sharpening. Stereo imaging is well-organised and stable, with instruments placed with reasonable confidence across the soundstage. Low-level detail emerges from a genuinely quiet background; the kind of fine textural information that rewards attentive listening without demanding it.
Tonally, the character is faithful rather than coloured: neither a warmth that flatters poor recordings nor a brightness that draws attention to surface noise. The Planar 6 RS is, at its heart, a turntable that respects the music placed upon it — which is, of course, precisely the point.
The Rega Planar 6 RS Edition is expected to arrive in late March or early April 2026, with initial stock limited.
