Rega Fono MM MK5 | Moving Magnet Phono Stage | Martins Hi-Fi

The UK's most decorated MM phono stage — and it's not hard to hear why.

The Rega Fono MM MK5 has been one of the most consistently awarded products in hi-fi for the better part of a decade. What Hi-Fi? named it Product of the Year in both 2023 and 2024, Best Phono Stage Under £300 from 2017 through to 2023, and Best Phono Stage Under £400 in 2025 — a run of recognition that speaks for itself. What Hi-Fi? summed it up perfectly, saying its award-winning sound oozes through speakers, with a lowered noise floor offering more clarity and expanding the horizons of its dynamic range.

Designed to be effective, easy to use, and above all to reproduce music, the Fono MM MK5 is the ideal first external phono stage for anyone stepping up from a built-in phono input — and a genuinely satisfying long-term partner for a quality MM cartridge at any level.

Features & Benefits

Fully Discrete, Cascaded, Complementary Input Stage

The Fono MM MK5 uses a fully discrete, cascaded, complementary amplifier input stage — a configuration specifically chosen to optimise performance with a moving magnet cartridge. Rather than relying on integrated circuitry at the critical first stage of amplification, Rega's all-discrete approach gives the circuit greater control over noise, linearity, and dynamic headroom. The result is an open, detailed, and musically engaging sound that consistently outperforms what you'd expect at the price. Explore the full Rega phono stage range to see where the Fono MM MK5 sits in the lineup.

Two-Stage RIAA Equalisation

The RIAA equalisation has been deliberately split into two separate stages to minimise interaction between them — a more sophisticated approach than a single-stage design, and one that contributes significantly to the Fono MM MK5's accuracy and musicality. Polyester capacitors are used in the signal path, with polypropylene capacitors deployed specifically in the RIAA equalisation circuits, where their neutrality and stability are most beneficial. RIAA accuracy is better than ±0.2dB from 100Hz to 100kHz — an excellent result at this price point.

Optimised for Moving Magnet Cartridges

The Fono MM MK5 is a dedicated moving magnet phono stage, with input loading set at 47kΩ in parallel with 100pF — the standard loading for MM cartridges, and ideal for the vast majority of MM cartridges on the market. With 41.4dB of gain at 1kHz and a maximum input level of 60mV, it handles everything from modest budget cartridges through to higher-output audiophile MMs with ease.

It is the natural external phono stage partner for the Rega Planar 1, Planar 2, and Planar 3, and works equally well with turntables from other manufacturers. If your amplifier — such as the Rega io — already includes a built-in phono stage, the Fono MM MK5 represents a clear and audible upgrade step. Speak to our team if you'd like guidance on whether your current setup would benefit from an external stage.

New Aluminium Casework

The Fono MM MK5 is housed in a newly designed aluminium case that matches the Rega Fono MC MK4 and Neo MK2 PSU, bringing a clean, modern aesthetic that sits neatly alongside the current Rega electronics range. Simple connectivity — one pair of RCA inputs, one pair of RCA outputs, and a power socket — makes setup straightforward and unintimidating.

A Clear Upgrade Path

If you're currently using the built-in phono stage in your amplifier or turntable, adding the Fono MM MK5 as a standalone unit is one of the most impactful upgrades you can make to a vinyl system. And if you later move to a moving coil cartridge, the Rega Fono MC MK4 is the natural next step — sharing the same casework and design language, and offering the same Rega engineering ethos at the MC level. Lifetime Warranty

Like every product Rega makes in their Southend-on-Sea factory, the Fono MM MK5 carries a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects. Learn more about the full Rega range available at Martins Hi-Fi on our hi-fi brands page.

System Building with the Fono MM MK5

The Fono MM MK5 is most commonly paired with a Rega turntable and a quality MM cartridge, but it works equally well in any system where an amplifier lacks a phono input — or where the built-in phono stage simply isn't doing justice to your turntable and cartridge.

A natural starting system might include a Rega Planar 1 or Planar 2, the Fono MM MK5, and a Rega io amplifier paired with Rega Kyte speakers. Or it may be that you already have a perfectly good system and simply want to unlock more of what your turntable is capable of — in which case, the Fono MM MK5 is one of the most cost-effective improvements you can make.
