Rega Planar 3 ECO Special Turntable

The Planar 3 ECO Special is Rega's answer to a straightforward problem: during manufacturing, some components emerge cosmetically imperfect — a slight blemish on a plinth, a minor mark on a finish. Nothing that affects performance. Nothing that affects longevity. But components that would otherwise be discarded.

Rega's Green Grade initiative rescues these parts, builds them into complete turntables, badges them honestly, and sells them at a reduced price. The ECO Special is a genuine Planar 3 in all but cosmetic flawlessness. It has been tested to the same standards as any Planar 3 that leaves the factory. It sounds identical. And it costs significantly less.

Where the Planar 3 ECO Special Sits in the Rega Range

The Planar 3 ECO Special sits above the Planar 1 Plus and below the Planar 3 RS Edition in the Rega range. It is the most accessible way to own the Planar 3 platform and the RB330 tonearm — the combination that has made the Planar 3 one of the most celebrated turntables in audio history.

The gap between the Planar 1 series and the Planar 3 is real. The RB330 is a considerably more refined arm than the RB110 — tighter bearing tolerances, improved internal wiring, and a more precise bias adjustment. The Planar 3 platform introduces double brace technology, which stiffens the structure between the tonearm mounting and the motor hub and dramatically reduces the transmission of motor vibration into the signal path. These are real, audible improvements.

The Planar 3 RS Edition above it adds the Nd5 cartridge, the Neo MK2 power supply, and a distinctive finish as a complete, optimised package. If your budget allows, it is worth comparing the two.

Sound and Performance

The Planar 3 has won What Hi-Fi?'s Product of the Year award multiple times across several generations. The reason is consistent: Rega has built a turntable at this price point that sounds like a more expensive one. The ECO Special delivers this performance in full.

The RB330 tonearm makes the biggest single difference. Its low-friction bearing assembly and precise construction allow the cartridge to track the groove with minimal interference from the arm itself. Pair it with an Nd3 cartridge — the natural match for this deck — and the improvement over the Planar 1 series is immediately apparent: more low-level detail, a more three-dimensional presentation, and a more assured rhythmic quality that makes records genuinely absorbing.

The double brace technology does something you can hear rather than measure: the music sounds more organised, less smeared, with cleaner transients and better separation between instruments. It is one of the most effective structural engineering decisions Rega has made in any turntable.

Build Quality and Design

The Planar 3 ECO Special is hand-assembled in Southend-on-Sea from the same components as the standard Planar 3, with the same quality testing applied. The cosmetic imperfections that give it its ECO designation are real — you may notice a minor blemish — but they are cosmetic only and covered by Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. Cosmetic variations are, reasonably, excluded from that warranty.

Each ECO Special carries an ECO badge identifying its provenance. Stock is limited and availability varies — these are not produced to a schedule but released as cosmetically imperfect components arise.

Connectivity and System Matching

The Planar 3 ECO Special requires a cartridge — one is not included. The Rega Nd3 is the recommended starting point: a moving magnet cartridge designed specifically for the RB330, with a bonded elliptical stylus and neodymium magnet that represents a clear step up from the Carbon. The Nd5 is a worthwhile upgrade if the budget allows — the nude elliptical diamond provides audibly better detail and bass definition.

A phono stage is also required — not included. The Rega Fono MM MK5 is the obvious match at this level. For those considering an MC cartridge further down the line, the Fono MC is worth looking at.

The Planar 3 ECO Special is also compatible with the Rega Neo PSU, which improves motor control and speed stability and can be added as a later upgrade.

Who Is It For?

The Planar 3 ECO Special is for the listener who wants to own the Planar 3 platform at a reduced price and is comfortable with the possibility of a minor cosmetic imperfection. It suits the practical buyer who cares about how a turntable sounds rather than how it looks in a showroom. It is not for someone who wants a flawless, showroom-condition product — that is the Planar 3 RS Edition. But for the listener who understands what they are buying and why, it represents outstanding value.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Planar 3 ECO Special is available to discuss in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will advise on cartridge and phono stage matching. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can talk you through whether the Planar 3 ECO Special or another model in the Rega range is the right fit for your budget and your system.

Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
