The Meridian DSP7200SE: When the Loudspeaker Becomes the System

There's something genuinely unusual sitting in our demonstration room at the moment. Not unusual in the sense of unfamiliar—after 50 years in specialist audio, we know Meridian's work intimately—but unusual in the sense that it challenges a fundamental assumption most audiophiles carry with them: that a loudspeaker is merely the final link in a chain of separate components. The DSP7200SE quietly dismantles that assumption, and does so with considerable elegance.
A Different Kind of Loudspeaker
Meridian has occupied a singular position in British audio engineering for decades. Where most manufacturers focus on a single discipline—driver design, cabinet construction, amplification—Meridian has always taken the longer view, asking what happens when every element of signal processing, amplification, and acoustic reproduction is designed as a single coherent whole. The DSP7200SE is the most complete answer to that question the company has yet produced at this scale.
This isn't simply a speaker with amplifiers bolted on. It's a complete high-resolution audio system, engineered from first principles to eliminate the compromises that accumulate when separate components attempt to communicate across analogue signal paths, mismatched impedances, and the inherent variability of connecting cables.
The Engineering Argument
The Special Edition designation matters here, and it's worth understanding precisely why. Where the standard DSP7200 is already a remarkable achievement, the SE adds a second dedicated DSP processor—doubling the available processing power. The practical consequence of this is significant: all incoming audio, including MQA Core streams, is rendered at 176.4 or 192kHz regardless of the original sampling rate. Every source, every format, arrives at the drive units having been resolved to the highest possible resolution the system can deliver.
Alongside this, Meridian's engineers have applied drive-unit clamp rings and extreme cabinet resonance control to the SE. These aren't cosmetic refinements. Resonance is one of the more insidious enemies of accurate reproduction—cabinet panels that flex, even microscopically, colour the sound in ways that are difficult to identify but impossible to ignore once removed. The SE's approach to this problem is characteristically methodical.
Then there is the beryllium tweeter. Beryllium occupies an unusual position in driver materials—extraordinarily light, extraordinarily stiff, and profoundly difficult to work with. The result in practice is a tweeter that tracks high-frequency transients with exceptional precision, free from the colouration that softer dome materials introduce under stress. Meridian describe the listening experience as one of "breathtaking clarity" enjoyed "effortlessly for long periods"—and in our experience, that combination of resolution and fatigue-free presentation is the harder achievement of the two.
The Practical Consideration: Room and Integration
The DSP7200SE is specified for rooms between 20 and 50 square metres—a range that encompasses most serious listening rooms and a great many living spaces where music and film are equally important. Within that envelope, the speaker's internal DSP allows for room-corrected positioning in a way that passive loudspeakers simply cannot offer. The bass control and punch Meridian reference isn't incidental; it's the product of amplification and drive units that have been designed together, operating with a coherence that external electronics struggle to replicate.
Connectivity follows Meridian's established ecosystem approach. For those already familiar with the company's products, integration is straightforward. For those arriving from conventional separates, the conversation about cabling and source compatibility is one we're well placed to have—it's the kind of detail that benefits from a demonstration rather than a specification sheet.
Living with the DSP7200SE
Ownership of a product at this level involves a different kind of relationship with your audio system. There are no amplifiers to audition, no interconnects to debate, no nagging question about whether a different combination of separates might perform better. The engineering decisions have been made, at considerable expense and with considerable expertise, by people who have spent careers thinking about precisely this problem.
What remains is the music—and the rather pleasant business of discovering how much of it you've been missing.
Our support doesn't conclude with delivery. Through follow-up calls and annual check-ins, we ensure you're extracting maximum performance from your investment. Should your listening preferences or room evolve, we're here to help recalibrate accordingly.
Our Trade-In Programme
Acquiring a loudspeaker of this calibre often involves parting with equipment you've valued for years. Our trade-in programme is designed to make that transition as straightforward as possible. We offer genuinely fair valuations on equipment regardless of brand or age, and we'd encourage you not to assume your current speakers or electronics hold insufficient value to contribute meaningfully to an upgrade at this level. We've often surprised customers pleasantly on that front.
Why Martins Hi-Fi
Five decades in specialist audio means we've seen fashions come and go, technologies arrive with great fanfare and quietly disappear, and a small number of genuinely significant products establish themselves as references. Meridian's DSP loudspeakers belong to that last category. We've demonstrated them extensively, installed them in a variety of rooms, and supported customers through years of ownership. That accumulated experience is available to you, without obligation, from the first conversation.
Our acoustically treated demonstration rooms allow you to hear what the DSP7200SE actually does, in conditions designed to let the loudspeaker perform rather than flatter. We'd suggest that's where any serious evaluation should begin.
Making Your Decision
The DSP7200SE occupies a specific and rather compelling position: a complete high-resolution audio system in loudspeaker form, engineered to a standard that rewards long-term ownership. It isn't an impulse purchase, nor should it be. It's the kind of decision that benefits from a conversation, a demonstration, and a clear understanding of what you're bringing it home to.
We're here for all of that, in whatever order suits you best.
