Meridian 258 Eight-Channel Power Amplifier

The Meridian 258 is a dedicated eight-channel Class-D power amplifier in a 1U rack-mount chassis — the amplification engine for distributed audio systems and multi-channel theatre installations that use passive loudspeakers. Over 100 watts per channel into 4 ohms, over 70 watts into 8 ohms, from a fanless unit with no active cooling and no thermal management to maintain. In a multi-room installation, it is the fit-and-forget amplifier that handles the speaker driving while the 218 Zone Controller or 251 handles source management and processing.

Performance and Installation

Eight channels of amplification in a 1U chassis makes the 258 efficient in rack space for large multi-room systems — a single unit can drive four stereo zones, or provide eight channels for a surround installation. The fanless design means no fan noise and no moving parts to service.

The 258 is designed to be driven by Meridian zone controllers and processors — it accepts the IP and IR control commands from the Meridian ecosystem, enabling volume management and system integration from the same interface that manages sources and zones.

Who Is It For?

The 258 is for distributed audio installations and home cinema systems using passive loudspeakers where eight channels of clean amplification are needed in minimal rack space. It pairs naturally with the 218 Zone Controller for multi-room systems and with the 271 for large theatre installations. Those whose rooms use Meridian's active DSP loudspeakers do not need a separate power amplifier — the DSP speakers have amplification built in.
