Linn Majik 3100 Mono Power Amplifier

The Majik 3100 is a single-channel, single-purpose amplifier. One input, one output, one drive unit. It exists to give Linn Exakt active system builders the flexibility to assign precisely one amplifier channel to precisely one driver — without the compromises that come from sharing a chassis or a power supply with another channel.

In practice, the 3100 is used where the channel count of a multi-channel unit doesn't quite fit the speaker configuration, or where a mono block arrangement suits the room layout better than a rack-mounted multi-channel chassis. Placed close to the speaker, it also reduces the length of speaker cable — one of the less celebrated but genuinely worthwhile benefits of active amplification.

Like all the Majik power amplifiers, the 3100 operates as part of a Linn Exakt system. It takes its signal from a Linn DSM network music player over the LINN link connection. All processing — crossover filtering, time alignment, speaker-specific optimisation — happens upstream in the DSM. The 3100 is pure amplification.

The Case for Mono Blocks in an Exakt System

A mono amplifier eliminates inter-channel crosstalk by design. In a conventional stereo amplifier, left and right channels share a power supply and, to some extent, influence each other under dynamic load. With a mono block, that relationship does not exist. Each channel is fully isolated.

For Exakt active systems, this matters particularly at the bass end: low-frequency drive units draw considerably more current than tweeters, and the dynamics of a demanding bass line can cause momentary modulation in a shared power supply. The 3100 removes that variable entirely for whichever driver it is assigned to.

Multiple 3100s can be combined freely with other Majik amplifiers to build the exact channel count required by a given speaker system. A three-way active pair needs six channels of amplification; that can come from three Majik 2100s, from six Majik 3100s, or from a combination of multi-channel units topped up with individual mono blocks.

Who Is It For?

The Majik 3100 suits anyone building a Linn Exakt active system who needs a single additional amplifier channel — to top up a multi-channel unit, to complete an awkward channel count, or to run mono blocks throughout for maximum inter-channel isolation. It is not a product you would buy in isolation; it is a building block for a larger active system.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Linn range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Ted Martin's daughter Elizabeth runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

If you are working through the channel count for an Exakt active system and wondering whether mono blocks make sense for your setup, that is exactly the kind of question we can help with.
