Linn Majik DSM 5G Streaming Amplifier

The Majik DSM 5G is Linn's entry point into the DSM range — a single-chassis network music player that integrates a streamer, DAC, phono stage, preamplifier, and two 100W Class D power amplifiers. Connect it to a pair of passive speakers and you have a complete, high-performing system. Add a pair of Linn 530 Exakt loudspeakers via the Exakt Link output and you have something considerably more ambitious. Either way, it is built in Glasgow to the same standards as Linn's flagship components.

The 5G designation marks the fifth generation of the Majik DSM, introduced in 2025. The amplifier section is approximately 8dB quieter than its predecessor — a meaningful improvement in a product where the noise floor determines how much low-level detail you actually hear. Class D amplification is often dismissed in enthusiast circles, but Linn's implementation is not the same as fitting a generic module. The performance of the DSM as a complete system-in-a-box is the result of coherent engineering across every stage, not the sum of separately purchased components.

Streaming and Sources

The Majik DSM 5G supports all the services that matter: Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Deezer, AirPlay 2, and Roon Ready. Internet radio and Calm Radio are also built in. Local network library playback via UPnP is supported, covering FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AIFF, AAC, MP3, OGG Vorbis, WMA, and DSD up to DSD256.

Maximum resolution is 24-bit/384kHz from network sources. The USB Type-C input handles up to 192kHz from a connected computer. SPDIF and Toslink digital inputs accept up to 192kHz. Two RCA analogue inputs are provided, along with built-in MM and MC phono stages — so vinyl is covered without an external phono stage.

HDMI with eARC allows the Majik DSM to serve as a TV audio hub as well as a dedicated music source.

Space Optimisation

Every Linn DSM — including the Majik — includes Space Optimisation, Linn's room correction technology. Rather than measuring the room with a microphone, Space Optimisation works from physical inputs: the dimensions and construction materials of the room, speaker positions, and boundary distances. It calculates acoustic behaviour mathematically and applies corrections accordingly.

For a product at this price, the inclusion of Space Optimisation is significant. Bass definition in particular responds well to it — the kind of improvement that in a conventional system would require acoustic treatment or a substantially more expensive amplifier. Set it up properly and the Majik DSM will outperform what its price suggests in terms of imaging and low-frequency control.

Who Is It For?

The Majik DSM 5G is for the listener who wants a clean, capable system without building it from separate components. It is particularly well suited to a smaller or secondary room where the aim is genuine musical quality rather than rack-filling box count. With a decent pair of passive speakers and Space Optimisation dialled in, it is a system that will hold its own against considerably more elaborate separates arrangements.

It is also the starting point for those considering a Linn Exakt active system at some point in the future. The Exakt Link output means the Linn 530 is a straightforward addition when the time comes. If the aim is eventually to move to the Selekt DSM, the Linn ecosystem is designed for that progression — nothing is wasted.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Linn range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Ted Martin's daughter Elizabeth runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Majik DSM 5G is a product we can demonstrate in context — if you want to hear what Space Optimisation actually does in practice, or whether the Exakt Link output to a pair of 530s is worth the extra investment, those are exactly the conversations we are set up to have.
