The Majik DSM 5G is Linn's entry point into the DSM range — a single-chassis network music player that integrates a streamer, DAC, phono stage, preamplifier, and two 100W Class D power amplifiers. Connect it to a pair of passive speakers and you have a complete, high-performing system in one box. Connect it to a pair of Linn 530 Exakt loudspeakers via the Exakt Link output and you have something considerably more ambitious. Built in Glasgow to the same exacting standards as Linn's flagship components, the Majik DSM 5G is the most capable all-in-one music system Linn has ever made at this price point — and the 5G designation marks a meaningful generational step, not a cosmetic refresh.

The fifth generation brings a measurably quieter amplifier section — approximately 8dB lower noise floor than its predecessor. In a product where the noise floor determines how much low-level detail you actually hear, this is not an incremental improvement. It is the kind of change that is immediately audible on complex, dynamically demanding material, where fine textural detail in the recording emerges from a blacker background with greater clarity and definition than the previous generation permitted. Class D amplification is often dismissed in enthusiast circles, but Linn's implementation is not a generic module fitted into a box. Streaming and Sources

The Majik DSM 5G supports all the streaming services that matter: Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Deezer, AirPlay 2, and Roon Ready. Internet radio via TuneIn and Calm Radio are built in. Local network library playback is supported via UPnP, covering FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AIFF, AAC, MP3, OGG Vorbis, WMA, and DSD up to DSD256. Maximum resolution from network sources is 24-bit/384kHz.

Physical source inputs are comprehensive: USB Type-C handles up to 192kHz from a connected computer; SPDIF and Toslink digital inputs accept up to 192kHz; two RCA analogue inputs are provided for line-level sources; and built-in MM and MC phono stages mean vinyl is covered without an external phono stage. HDMI with eARC allows the Majik DSM 5G to serve as the audio hub for a television system as well as a dedicated music source — a genuinely useful capability in a living room context where the two are rarely kept entirely separate.

Space Optimisation

Every Linn DSM — including the Majik — includes Space Optimisation, Linn's room correction technology. Rather than measuring the room with a microphone and applying corrections derived from that measurement, Space Optimisation works from physical inputs: the dimensions and construction materials of the room, speaker positions, and boundary distances. It calculates the acoustic behaviour of the room mathematically and applies corrections accordingly — targeting the bass modes and boundary reinforcement that physical room geometry inevitably creates, without the artefacts that measurement-based correction can introduce.

For a product at this price, the inclusion of Space Optimisation is significant. Bass definition in particular responds well to it — the kind of improvement that in a conventional system would require dedicated acoustic treatment or a substantially more expensive amplifier. Set it up properly and the Majik DSM 5G will outperform what its price suggests in terms of imaging precision and low-frequency control.

Exakt Link — The Path Forward

The Exakt Link output on the Majik DSM 5G is not merely a feature on a specification sheet. It is the connection point for a fundamentally different kind of loudspeaker — one where the digital crossover, DAC conversion, and amplification all happen inside the cabinet, under the control of Linn's Exakt processing, with the passive crossover removed from the signal chain entirely. The Linn 360 Active Loudspeaker represents the summit of this architecture. For those beginning the journey, the Exakt Link means the Majik DSM 5G is not a terminal product — it is the source component for a system that can grow considerably beyond its starting point without replacing the hub.

The Majik DSM 5G is for the listener who wants a genuinely capable, beautifully integrated music system without building it from separate components. It is particularly well suited to a primary living room or a dedicated listening space where the aim is musical quality and system simplicity in equal measure — and where the option to grow the system over time, via Exakt active loudspeakers, matters. With a good pair of passive speakers and Space Optimisation properly configured, it holds its own against considerably more elaborate separates arrangements. With a pair of Linn 360 Active Loudspeakers connected via Exakt Link, it becomes something else entirely.

For those whose ambitions extend towards the higher DSM tiers, the Linn Klimax System Hub represents the summit of the Linn streaming architecture — but the Majik DSM 5G is where the DSM story begins, and it begins very well indeed.
