Rega Mercury Reference Pre-Amplifier

The Mercury is Rega's reference pre-amplifier — a fully discrete symmetrical design that represents the company's most sophisticated approach to the pre-amplification stage. It is the controlling component in Rega's reference separates system, designed specifically to partner the Solis power amplifier, and available for use with any suitably capable power amplifier. It includes a high-performance DAC, a discrete headphone amplifier, digital connectivity via S/PDIF and USB, and a full-colour IPS display — a genuinely comprehensive reference pre-amplifier.

Rega describes it as delivering "the pinnacle of British hi-fi engineering." For a company that has been designing electronics since the early 1970s, that is a considered statement rather than a marketing superlative.

Where the Mercury Sits in the Rega Range

The Mercury is the pre-amplifier counterpart to the Solis power amplifier, and together they form Rega's reference separates system — sitting above the Osiris integrated amplifier in the Rega range.

The separates approach offers advantages that a single chassis cannot fully replicate. Power supply noise from the power amplifier's output stage cannot couple into the pre-amplifier's sensitive gain circuits when the two are in separate enclosures with separate power supplies. The mechanical vibration inherent in a powerful output stage cannot reach the pre-amplifier's components. And the pre-amplifier can be designed entirely around the requirements of its own signal-level circuits, without having to accommodate the demands of driving speaker loads.

The Mercury also offers capabilities that the Osiris does not: built-in DAC with S/PDIF and USB connectivity, a discrete headphone amplifier, and a full-colour IPS display. For those who want Rega's finest analogue pre-amplification alongside digital flexibility and a self-contained headphone solution, the Mercury provides it.

The Mercury is also compatible with the Aethos, whose pre-amplifier output can drive the Solis as an alternative configuration — though the Mercury and Solis as a matched pair is the primary design intent.

Sound and Performance

The central engineering decision in the Mercury is fully discrete symmetrical circuitry throughout the signal path. "Discrete" means individual transistors and components rather than packaged integrated circuits — each gain stage is built from selected parts, with behaviour controlled by the designer rather than determined by a chip manufacturer's production tolerances. "Symmetrical" means the positive and negative halves of the audio signal are handled by mirror-image circuits, ensuring perfect channel balance and that any non-linearities in one half of the circuit are cancelled by the other.

Symmetrical circuitry is the topology of choice for reference pre-amplification because it offers inherently lower distortion and better rejection of common-mode noise — interference that couples equally into both signal lines is cancelled at the output rather than amplified. Combined with discrete construction, the Mercury's signal path is as close to "nothing in the circuit" as active pre-amplification can achieve.

The built-in DAC accepts S/PDIF inputs (coaxial and optical) as well as USB, making the Mercury a genuinely digital-ready reference component. The discrete headphone amplifier — not a shared circuit with the line output, but a dedicated stage — provides a serious standalone headphone listening option. The full-colour IPS display provides clear source selection and level information without the compromises of a simple LED or VFD readout.

Build Quality and Design

The Mercury is hand-assembled at Rega's facility in Southend-on-Sea. The custom backlit Orbit remote control is included — a purpose-designed handset rather than a universal remote, which reflects the Mercury's status as a reference component. The reference mains power lead is included as standard; at this level, Rega's view is that the mains connection is part of the component's specification, not an optional extra.

Standby mode allows the Mercury to be left on with minimal power draw, ready for immediate use without the full warm-up period that a cold start from off would require. This is standard practice for reference pre-amplifiers where circuit stability is a factor in measured performance.

Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.

Connectivity and System Matching

The Mercury accepts digital inputs via S/PDIF coaxial, S/PDIF optical, and USB. Analogue connectivity details — the number of line inputs, input sensitivity, and output specifications — should be confirmed via Martin's Hi-Fi at the time of purchase, as the Mercury is a new product and full published specifications were not available at the time of writing.

The primary power amplifier partner is the Rega Solis. The Mercury's pre-amplifier output is designed to drive the Solis's fully symmetrical input stage correctly. The combination is optimised by Rega as a matched system.

For analogue sources at this level, a reference phono stage is required. The Rega AOS MC Phono Stage is the appropriate companion, connecting via one of the Mercury's line inputs. Sources at the level of the Planar 10 or Naia are the natural turntable partners.

Dave or Chris at Martin's can advise on system configuration, compatible power amplifiers, and the full specification of the Mercury as confirmed by Rega. Given the Mercury's status as a new product, a conversation before purchase is recommended.

Who Is It For?

The Mercury is for the listener building Rega's reference separates system — partnered with the Solis power amplifier, a reference phono stage, and sources at the level of the Planar 10 or Naia. It is also for those who want a reference pre-amplifier with onboard digital capability — a genuine DAC, USB connectivity, and a discrete headphone amplifier alongside the finest analogue pre-amplification Rega makes. Those who prefer the convenience of a single-chassis reference solution should look at the Osiris.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Mercury is a new addition to the Rega range; call Dave or Chris to discuss availability and to arrange a listening session with the Solis as a matched system. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to experienced hi-fi specialists who understand the Rega reference range and can advise on the complete system around it.

Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
