Meridian DSP5200SE Special Edition Active Floorstanding Speaker

The DSP5200SE is the smallest loudspeaker in Meridian's Special Edition range — under a metre tall, with a footprint modest enough for most rooms — but its size does not constrain what it does acoustically. This is a fully active, fully digital loudspeaker delivering 116dB peak SPL from 35Hz to over 32kHz, with a beryllium dome tweeter, nine technologies from Meridian's DSP programme, and 225 watts of matched internal amplification. It is a complete audio system in a compact cabinet.

The Special Edition designation is not a finish or a trim level. It reflects Meridian's scientific research into psychoacoustics and human auditory perception — specifically, how the brain processes live sound — applied to the design of the loudspeaker from the ground up. The result is a more accurate time-domain response and significantly improved transient speed across the entire frequency range.

Meridian and Martins Hi-Fi

Meridian Audio was founded in 1977 in Cambridgeshire by Bob Stuart and Allen Boothroyd. Their work on active loudspeaker design, digital signal processing, and how humans actually perceive sound has produced some of the most technically distinguished speakers made anywhere. Martins Hi-Fi has had a long-standing relationship with Meridian throughout that time. The full Meridian range has been a fixture in our Norwich showroom for decades and we understand it from entry level through to the reference DSP9.

The 2½-Way Design

The DSP5200SE has three drive units, but it is not a conventional three-way loudspeaker. The configuration is deliberately chosen: the beryllium dome tweeter handles treble, one 160mm polypropylene long-throw mid/bass driver covers the rest of the frequency range, and a second identical 160mm driver is dedicated entirely to low-frequency bass. This 2½-way arrangement doubles the bass-handling capability without introducing the imaging blur that results from crossing over between a tweeter and two mid-range drivers. It combines the purity of a single treble-to-mid crossover with the additional bass capacity of a three-driver design.

Each driver is fed by its own dedicated amplifier channel. Three Class-AB amplifiers — each rated at 75 watts, 225 watts in total — are matched specifically to their respective drivers. There is no shared power supply between channels and no passive crossover network in the signal path. The amplifiers are tuned to the acoustic characteristics of their driver, not designed to a generic specification.

The DSP section uses two DSP devices, providing the processing power to render all audio — including MQA Core streams — at 176.4kHz or 192kHz regardless of the incoming sample rate. Incoming 44.1kHz or 48kHz signals are upsampled internally to 88.2kHz and 96kHz. The result is increased resolution, detail, and clarity that benefits both music and film soundtracks.

DSP Technologies

The DSP5200SE implements nine of Meridian's core signal processing technologies:

Full Frequency Alignment (FFA) uses digital filters and delays to correct group delay across the frequency range, ensuring every frequency arrives at the listener's ear simultaneously. FFA is enabled by default and has a measurable effect on timing accuracy and imaging precision.

Bespoke Signal Mapping applies tailored crossover filters designed specifically for this driver configuration — not a generic crossover, but one optimised for the acoustic characteristics of these three specific drive units in this cabinet.

E3 Bass (Expand, Extend, Enhance) applies three-stage filter processing to extract low-frequency performance beyond what the cabinet volume would ordinarily produce. The DSP5200SE reaches 35Hz in a cabinet under a metre tall; E3 Bass is why.

Q-Sync minimises jitter through Meridian's buffering system, preserving timing integrity throughout the digital signal path.

True Time — Meridian's apodising filter — eliminates pre-ringing from digital filters, converting pre-echo to post-echo for cleaner transients and more natural musical decay.

True Link provides encrypted high-definition audio transfer over SpeakerLink connections, maintaining MQA authentication through the signal path and ensuring clock signal integrity.

Free-Q compensates for acoustic effects introduced by specific placement conditions — near a wall or in a corner. At this level, where the DSP5200SE is placed directly affects what it does, and Free-Q allows the loudspeaker to adapt.

Pro-Active Bass and Pro-Active Thermal protect the drive units from over-excursion and thermal stress at high output levels, allowing the loudspeaker to operate at its performance limits without risk.

Connectivity

The DSP5200SE operates natively within a Meridian system via SpeakerLink — the RJ45 connection that carries digital audio and control signals between Meridian components. A co-axial RCA digital input provides an alternative connection for non-Meridian sources, accepting signals up to 96kHz/24-bit.

Audio fed into either input is simultaneously output on both the co-axial and SpeakerLink outputs, allowing downstream components to be daisy-chained without additional switching hardware. The Master loudspeaker in a pair can be configured to switch between input sources according to the selected source on the wider system.

The eight-character front display shows source and volume information and can be blanked during use — useful when listening in a dimmed room.

Finish Options

The DSP5200SE is finished as standard in piano lacquer black. A White option is available, and the Select finishing option allows the loudspeaker to be supplied in any colour of your choice — matte or gloss — making it genuinely adaptable to any interior. Who Is It For?

The DSP5200SE suits the listener who wants genuine Meridian Special Edition performance in a room where the DSP7200SE or DSP8000 XE would be physically or acoustically too large. It delivers the same psychoacoustic research, the same DSP technology suite, and the same fully active architecture in a compact floorstanding cabinet. At 116dB peak SPL from 35Hz, there is no acoustic compromise.

It is also well suited to a dedicated home cinema configuration — the matching DSP5200SE HC/VC centre channel makes a natural partner, and the SpeakerLink ecosystem integrates cleanly with Meridian's processors and controllers.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has demonstrated and sold Meridian loudspeakers for decades. Our long-standing relationship with the brand means we understand where each model sits, what it does in a real room, and how it integrates within a Meridian system. At £13,000, the DSP5200SE deserves a proper listening session — call ahead and we will have it set up and ready.
