Fyne Audio F1-8s

The F1-8s is the evolution of the F1-8 — a hand-built standmount loudspeaker from Fyne Audio's flagship F1 series, designed specifically for the smaller listening room. It is built around an 8-inch (200mm) IsoFlare point-source driver with a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter, a reimagined crossover, and a twin-cavity BassTrax Tractrix ported cabinet in a lacquered burr walnut finish. Frequency response extends from 30Hz to over 34kHz, sensitivity is 91dB, and the recommended amplifier range covers everything from single-ended triode valve designs to the highest-powered solid-state amplifiers. Dr Paul Mills and the Fyne Audio development team applied a fully new crossover design to the F1-8s to optimise the performance of the updated IsoFlare driver — the result is a standmount capable of room-filling authority that belies its compact format.

IsoFlare Driver Technology

The IsoFlare driver is the defining engineering choice in every Fyne Audio F1 series loudspeaker. The 200mm bass/midrange cone and the 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter share a common axis — the tweeter fires from the centre of the cone — so both drivers radiate sound from a single point in space. This point-source behaviour produces consistent time alignment between low and high frequencies across the entire listening area, and isotropic dispersion that a conventional separated-driver arrangement cannot replicate. The HF response extends seamlessly beyond 34kHz, which Fyne Audio attribute directly to the compression driver's coaxial integration with the bass/midrange cone.

The magnesium dome compression tweeter is stiffer and lighter than a titanium equivalent, which reduces resonance and extends high-frequency linearity. The twin-cavity BassTrax ported loading gives the bass section additional acoustic control at the lowest frequencies, and the combination of cavity loading and BassTrax Tractrix diffuser contributes directly to the 30Hz in-room extension from a cabinet of this size.

The F1-8s uses Fyne Audio's twin-cavity loading system within the cabinet, working in concert with the downfiring BassTrax Tractrix diffuser at the base. The Tractrix profile manages the expanding bass wavefront as it exits the port, reducing turbulence and colouration and smoothing the integration into the room. This makes the F1-8s less sensitive to floor-boundary effects and easier to position than a conventional rear-ported standmount — a meaningful practical advantage when working with smaller rooms where flexibility of placement is limited.

HF Energy and Presence Controls

The F1-8s includes precision potentiometer controls on the rear panel for independent adjustment of high-frequency energy and presence — allowing the speaker to be fine-tuned to the acoustics of the room and the characteristics of the partnering amplification without external equalisation. This is a significant practical advantage in a smaller listening room where tonal balance can be more sensitive to placement and room boundaries.

Cabinet and Finish

The cabinet is hand-crafted and hand-finished at Fyne Audio's UK manufacturing facility in a sumptuous lacquered burr walnut finish. It is a bold, considered statement for the audiophile working with limited space — a speaker that makes no visual compromise while occupying a compact footprint.

The F1-8s is for the serious listener who wants the full F1 series experience in a standmount format — the point-source coherence, the extended HF bandwidth, and the bass authority of the F1 range in a cabinet that suits a dedicated listening room without the physical footprint of a large floorstander. The high sensitivity means it works with lower-powered valve amplification as readily as with high-powered solid state, making it an unusually flexible choice at this level.

Those undecided between standmount and floorstander within the F1 range should compare the F1-8s with the F1-10s, which moves to a 250mm IsoFlare in a twin-cavity floorstander and reaches 26Hz. The F1-8 is the direct predecessor and worth comparing if available.
