The Engineering
Linn used Finite Element Analysis—the same technology used in aerospace and Formula 1—to examine every limitation of the original Keel design. The result is a comprehensively redesigned sub-chassis with an intricate bracing structure that pushes the first resonance mode from 180Hz to 500Hz, while breaking up and dissipating problematic acoustic energy across the entire spectrum.
At 2.2kg, Keel SE weighs nearly double the original. But this isn't just about adding mass—it's about optimising where that mass sits.
Three Key Improvements
1. Stiffness Where It Matters The area between the Karousel bearing mount and tonearm collar has been dramatically stiffened. Even microscopic rocking movements here affect the stylus-to-groove relationship, causing tracking distortion. Keel SE's rigidity minimises these geometric changes.
2. Better Weight Distribution Material has been strategically removed from calculated areas beneath the armboard. When fully loaded with platter, arm and cartridge, the centre of mass now balances more evenly on the suspension. This improves how the three springs share the load and reduces inertia, enhancing the suspension's acoustic isolation properties.
3. Superior Finish The tonearm collar is machined separately and fitted later, allowing the armboard to be face-milled to a flawless plane. After anodising to a deep black finish with laser-etched logo, this is visibly Linn's finest sub-chassis.
