Saturday Sessions: New Bowie Vinyl at Martins Hi-Fi — 19th September
There is something quietly remarkable about hearing a future icon before the world had caught up with him. On Saturday 19th September, we are hosting a listening session around a new vinyl compilation of David Bowie's 1965 recordings — a collection that captures him as Davie Jones, working with producer Shel Talmy, the man behind early records by The Kinks and The Who. The backing bands shift across the album — Davie Jones and the Lower Third, Davie Jones, and The Mannish Boys — and if you look closely enough at the credits, you will find a young Jimmy Page on guitar. It is a record worth hearing properly.
We will be playing it on our SME Model 12A Mk2 ex-demonstration turntable — a deck that rewards exactly this kind of close listening. The SME brings a composure and retrieval of low-level detail that makes 1965 studio recordings sound less like historical documents and more like performances. Scratchy they may occasionally be; lifeless they are not.
