Linn Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel

The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel is the component that brings Linn's Exakt active technology to loudspeakers without built-in amplification — a single chassis incorporating a Katalyst DAC, a digital Exakt crossover, and eight channels of 100 W Chakra amplification, connected to a Linn DSM via Exakt Link and to the drive units of a loudspeaker directly via speaker cable. It is, in architecture and in ambition, the most complete expression of the Exakt philosophy available at Akurate tier: everything required to drive a three-way active loudspeaker system from a digital source, with no analogue crossover anywhere in the signal chain, in a single precision-engineered chassis.

The Exaktbox exists for a specific purpose — to make the full Exakt active experience available to passive loudspeakers that are Exakt-capable but lack integrated amplification. In that role, it is without a credible alternative. No external crossover-amplifier combination approaches the precision, integration, or upgradeability of the Exakt architecture. The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel is not a component that approximates this standard. It sets it.

Exakt Technology — Digital Processing Before DAC Conversion

The defining characteristic of Linn's Exakt technology is the point at which the signal is divided between drive units. In a conventional loudspeaker system — however capable the amplifier upstream — the crossover sits inside the cabinet, after the amplifier output stage, built from passive components whose behaviour is governed by physics that cannot be engineered away. Phase errors accumulate at crossover frequencies. Individual driver tolerances compound the problem. The passive network that separates bass from treble is simultaneously the most consequential and the least correctable element in the entire system.

Exakt replaces it entirely. The signal travels from the Linn DSM to the Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel via Exakt Link — a digital connection carrying a bit-perfect signal. Inside the Exaktbox, the signal is processed in the digital domain: crossover division, time alignment between drivers, and individual driver equalisation are all applied mathematically, before DAC conversion. The Katalyst DAC then converts the processed signal immediately before the Chakra amplifier stage — at which point each channel drives its assigned drive unit directly. There is no passive crossover between amplifier and driver, and the crossover that does exist is not subject to component tolerances, temperature drift, or the physical limitations of passive networks. It is mathematics, applied precisely, for that specific loudspeaker model.

Katalyst DAC Architecture

The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel incorporates Katalyst DAC architecture — the conversion technology from Linn's flagship Klimax range, brought into the Akurate tier. Katalyst addresses one of the fundamental limitations of standard chip-based DAC implementations: the precision of the reference voltage and current sources that govern the conversion process. Standard DAC chips accept a shared, generic reference supply; Katalyst provides a dedicated, precision-engineered reference for each DAC channel, with lower noise and higher consistency than the shared approach permits. The practical result is a conversion stage that preserves more of the musical information in the digital signal and introduces less noise at the output — across six channels, simultaneously, with each channel maintaining the same standard of conversion accuracy.

This is not a marginal distinction. Six channels of Katalyst conversion, applied immediately before dedicated amplifier stages for each drive unit, is a substantially more rigorous approach to multi-channel active conversion than anything available outside the Linn Exakt ecosystem at this performance level.

Chakra Amplification

Eight channels of 100 W Chakra amplification are built into the Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel. Chakra is Linn's proprietary amplifier topology — developed in-house and used across the Akurate and Klimax amplifier ranges. Each Chakra channel drives its assigned drive unit directly from the output of the Katalyst DAC, with no passive crossover network in the speaker cable path and no signal shared between channels. The amplifier's entire output is delivered to one drive unit, under conditions defined precisely by the upstream Exakt processing — not negotiated by a passive network that cannot distinguish between programme material and distortion.

At 100 W per channel, the Chakra stages in the Exaktbox have the dynamic headroom to control even demanding drivers across all programme conditions. The combination of Katalyst conversion and Chakra amplification — in a single chassis, for a single loudspeaker system, under unified digital control — is an approach to active drive that repays itself at every listening level, with every kind of music.

Connectivity and Upgradeability

The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel connects to a Linn DSM via two Exakt Link inputs. It provides six RCA phono line outputs and 16 speaker output connections via banana/binding post, supporting loudspeaker configurations up to three-way active stereo. The Linn Dynamik power supply is used throughout.

The Exaktbox is software-upgradeable. Speaker-specific Exakt filter sets — the precise crossover profiles and driver timing corrections for a given loudspeaker model — are applied and updated via software. Changing loudspeakers requires a profile update, not a hardware replacement. The Utopik power supply upgrade is available for the Akurate Exaktbox, bringing the power supply to the current Linn standard — a worthwhile upgrade for earlier units and a meaningful performance step in its own right.

Who Is It For?

The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel is for the Linn system owner who wants to run Exakt-capable loudspeakers actively — whether with an existing pair of Linn passive speakers with Exakt compatibility or as the amplification foundation of a new Exakt active build centred on a Linn DSM. It is a serious component at a serious price point, and it warrants a conversation about the specific loudspeakers, the current DSM, and the Exakt upgrade path before purchase. For extended bass management in a larger active system, the Linn Exaktbox Sub integrates seamlessly alongside the Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel within the same Exakt framework. For those building at the summit of the Linn active hierarchy, the Linn Klimax System Hub and Linn 360 Active Loudspeaker represent the next destination.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

We have extensive experience configuring Linn Exakt systems at Akurate level — matching Exaktbox profiles to specific loudspeakers, carrying out Space Optimisation, and ensuring the system performs correctly from the first day of ownership. The Akurate Exaktbox 6 Channel is not a product you buy in isolation and set up alone; we are involved in the configuration and remain available for the ongoing support that a system of this complexity warrants.

When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
