Fyne Audio F57SP-8 Centre Channel Speaker

The Fyne Audio F57SP-8 is the largest and most capable centre channel speaker in the Fyne Audio range — a 2.5-way SP Series loudspeaker built around a 200mm IsoFlare point-source driver with a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter, a second 200mm bass driver, and a 200mm electromagnetically damped Auxiliary Bass Radiator. It is the centre channel designed for cinema systems where the front left and right speakers use 200mm or larger IsoFlare drivers — the F502SP, the F700 Series, and the F1 Series — and where a centre channel of equivalent driver size, equivalent dynamic authority, and equivalent SP Series build quality is required to match them without compromise. Sensitivity is 92dB, bass extension reaches 42Hz, recommended amplifier power is 30–200W, and the cabinet weighs 19.8kg. It is sold as a single unit, in Piano Gloss Black, Walnut, or White.

The distinction between the F57SP-6 and the F57SP-8 is precisely this: the F57SP-6 uses a 150mm IsoFlare driver and is matched to the F500SP and F501SP front speakers; the F57SP-8 uses a 200mm IsoFlare driver and is matched to the F502SP and F700 Series. The larger driver delivers 1dB more sensitivity, a full 5Hz lower bass extension, and the dynamic headroom to keep pace with high-efficiency main speakers at cinema listening levels without the AV receiver's channel compensation doing remedial work.

IsoFlare Point-Source Driver Technology

The IsoFlare driver is the defining engineering decision in every Fyne Audio loudspeaker, and its presence in the F57SP-8 in 200mm form is what makes this speaker the correct — not merely the largest available — centre channel for 200mm IsoFlare front speakers. The driver combines a 200mm multi-fibre cone with FyneFlute surround and a 25mm magnesium dome compression tweeter mounted at its centre: both drivers sharing a single axis, radiating sound from precisely the same point in space. This point-source geometry delivers consistent time alignment and isotropic dispersion across the entire seating area.

In a centre channel application, off-axis coherence is not an abstract engineering virtue — it is the practical difference between dialogue that is intelligible from every seat in the room and dialogue that loses focus and presence as you move off-centre. The IsoFlare driver's point-source geometry means the frequency response you hear from the side seats is the same frequency response you hear from the sweet spot. A conventional centre channel with a physically separated tweeter above the bass/midrange unit cannot replicate this — the time relationship between frequencies shifts with listening position, and the coherence of the sound shifts with it.

A second 200mm multi-fibre bass driver is mounted alongside the IsoFlare unit, crossing in at 250Hz in the 2.5-way configuration. This division of labour allows the IsoFlare driver to operate from 250Hz upward through the midrange and treble — the frequency range it is optimised for — while the bass driver handles low-frequency loading below that point.

Auxiliary Bass Radiator with Adjustable Electromagnetic Damping

The Auxiliary Bass Radiator is a passive radiating cone — no voice coil, no magnet — tuned to move in sympathy with the internal cabinet pressure and extend low-frequency output without a port tube. In a centre channel application, the absence of a port aperture is a genuine practical advantage: there is no opening to position clear of a rack, wall, projection screen cabinet, or equipment below the screen. The F57SP-8's ABR is a 200mm multi-fibre cone unit with electromagnetically damped tuning — and it is the ABR's adjustable damping that gives this speaker a degree of placement intelligence that few centre channel speakers at any price offer.

Two settings are selectable at the crossover:

In free-space mode, the ABR is calibrated for a speaker positioned away from walls and reflective surfaces — on a dedicated stand, an open shelf, or a low equipment rack with clear space behind and below.

In boundary mode, the damping compensates for the bass reinforcement that occurs when the speaker is placed close to a wall, directly beneath a projection screen, or on a low rack where the rear surface adds to the low-frequency output. The boundary setting reduces ABR excursion slightly to maintain tonal balance consistent with the F502SP and F700 Series main speakers, regardless of where the centre channel ends up in the room.

This is not a minor trim — the difference between free-space and boundary settings is immediately audible in situ, and taking the time to compare both in the actual installation position is always worthwhile.

Crossover and Construction

The crossover divides at 250Hz and 1.7kHz — identical to the F502SP and F700 Series — which is the specification that guarantees tonal consistency across all three front channels. Cabinet construction is high-density MDF with internal bracing, measuring 270 × 760 × 340mm at a weight of 19.8kg. The finish options — Piano Gloss Black, Walnut, and White — match the available finishes across the SP and F700 Series ranges exactly.

Who Is It For?

The F57SP-8 is for the buyer building a large-format Fyne Audio cinema system where the front left and right speakers use 200mm or larger IsoFlare drivers. It is the correct centre channel match for the F502SP, the F700 Series, and — as the most capable Fyne Audio centre channel currently available — the Fyne Audio F704SP and the Fyne Audio F1-8s. The 92dB sensitivity and 100W RMS continuous power handling give it the dynamic headroom to keep pace with high-efficiency main speakers at cinema listening levels without strain.

Those building with 150mm IsoFlare front speakers — the F500SP or F501SP — should consider the Fyne Audio F57SP-6 instead: the correctly matched centre channel for that driver size. For those building at a lower budget with the Fyne Audio F502E LCR, that speaker offers the E Series matched front stage with a 200mm IsoFlare driver at a more accessible price. The Fyne Audio SuperTrax super tweeter is a natural complement for those seeking extended high-frequency performance across the full cinema system.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. The F57SP-8 is available to discuss and hear at our Norwich showroom — call ahead and we will arrange a relevant system demonstration.

When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on matching, placement, and the right ABR damping setting for your installation.
