The Rega Replay: Where Fifty Years of Knowhow Meets a Single Afternoon
A customer came in recently, slightly suspicious. "Is it really that simple?" he asked, holding the box. He'd spent twenty minutes on a forum the night before reading about tracking force, anti-skate, and whether he needed a separate earth wire. We told him to go home, put the counterweight on, and come back if anything went wrong. He hasn't come back.
That is, more or less, the Rega Replay in a sentence.
Rega spent three years refining the Replay — not to add complexity, but to remove it. The result is a turntable that can be set up and playing in under a minute. There is no arm balancing, no fiddly bias adjustment. The RB110 tonearm uses Rega-designed, ultra-low friction bearings and a factory pre-set bias setting — you push the counterweight on and you are done. The Carbon moving magnet cartridge arrives factory fitted and aligned. Everything is ready before you have even chosen a record.
Why Simple Doesn't Mean Compromised
The engineering underneath the Replay is not entry-level thinking dressed up in a low price. The 24V synchronous motor — low noise, low vibration — sits in a bespoke module with a CNC-machined aluminium pulley. The platter is a 23mm phenolic resin design chosen for its flywheel effect: a higher-mass platter spins more consistently, and consistent speed is what keeps a piano note sounding like a piano note rather than something slightly sea-sick.
The plinth is a laminated, skeletal low-mass design — because mass in the wrong place (the structure that holds the arm and the bearing) introduces resonance that muddies the signal. Rega have been making this argument since the 1970s, and the Replay is the most affordable expression of it.
What you hear is detailed and dynamic. The Carbon cartridge is not the last word in resolution — nobody is pretending it is — but it is an honest starting point, and the Rega Replay Turntable as a complete system lets that cartridge do its job without fighting the deck underneath it.
The Obvious Next Step
If you want to upgrade without changing the turntable, the cartridge is the first and easiest move. The Rega Nd3 is a natural step up — a moving magnet design built to the same philosophy, fitted to the same headshell, and noticeably more resolved through the midrange.
For the phono stage, the Rega Fono Mini A2D is the compact, no-fuss companion that keeps the signal path short and clean. It also has a USB output if you want to archive records digitally — useful, and the kind of practical detail that matters when vinyl becomes a habit rather than an experiment.
The Replay carries Rega's lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects. That is not a small thing at any price.
Hear It at Martins Hi-Fi
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
