The Linn 343: Reference Performance in a Form That Fits Your Home
There is a particular kind of scepticism that greets a compact loudspeaker claiming reference performance. You have heard it before: big sound for a small box, remarkable for its size, an impressive achievement given the constraints. The 343 sidesteps all of that. It does not ask for allowances.
Linn's starting point was Pistonik — the motor system introduced in the flagship 360 loudspeakers, and now, for the first time, the founding principle of a loudspeaker designed around it from the outset. Cabinet geometry, down-firing bass architecture, drive unit behaviour and supporting electronics were developed together as a single acoustic system. That is not a refinement of existing compact loudspeaker thinking. It is a different proposition entirely.
What Pistonik Actually Does
The 343's bass system is built around a down-firing 220 mm aluminium diaphragm with Pistonik — positioned close to the floor, where it uses a highly reflective acoustic boundary to deliver omnidirectional bass energy into the room efficiently. A 190 mm aluminium diaphragm upper bass driver handles the frequencies where much of music's body and presence is formed. Together, Linn state that these lower-frequency drivers carry around 70% of the loudspeaker's acoustic workload.
The result is bass with depth, authority and composure — not the slightly pressurised, one-note bass that compact enclosures sometimes produce, but something with texture and immediacy. Lower frequencies arrive with the sense that they belong to the recording rather than being a by-product of cabinet volume.
A Cabinet That Disappears
The continuous cabinet — free from hard edges — is not primarily an aesthetic choice, though it is a striking one. The absence of hard edges reduces the diffraction effects that reveal the position of the box in the room. Reflections arriving from the room retain more of the same spectral character as the direct sound, keeping the image stable and spatially precise across a wide listening area. The 343 releases the recording into the room as the speaker itself recedes into the background.
The cabinet is formed from a glass-fibre-reinforced moulding compound — chosen for its stiffness and density, which allows thinner walls whilst preserving structural integrity. This maximises the internal acoustic volume whilst keeping the 343's proportions genuinely compact.
Two Variants
The Linn 343 is available in two forms. The Exakt Integrated is the more self-sufficient: Utopik power supply, Exakt digital crossover, Power DAC architecture, Organik DACs and Adaptive Bias Control amplification are all housed within the integrated rear module. Two Exakt Link connections and Space Optimisation+ room correction are built in.
The Passive with Active Bass (PWAB) variant shares the same Pistonik drive units, and Utopik and Power DAC for the bass system, with the upper bass, midrange and tweeter array driven by external amplification — which suits those already invested in Linn's Exakt ecosystem and wishing to use existing amplification for the upper frequencies.
The Module
At the rear of the 343, a curvaceous cowl houses the electronics module — mounted on a three-point spring system that mechanically isolates it from the cabinet, and cooled passively using a custom triangular-prism aluminium heat sink with internal fins that draws air up through the module like a chimney. It operates in silence. The only external evidence of this is a small machined vent at the top of the loudspeaker.
It is a quiet expression of the same design principle found throughout the 343: advanced technology gathered into a form that remains calm, compact and complete.
Hear It in Norwich
The 343 is one of the more remarkable things to arrive in our Norwich showroom in some time. A loudspeaker this capable and this physically unimposing is a genuinely unusual combination — and one that only makes sense when you hear it in a room that could be your own.
Dave and Chris are on hand to guide you through the 343 and how it fits into your wider system. Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968 — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
