Linn Majik DSM: One Box, No Compromises
A customer came in last year and said he didn't want a rack full of boxes anymore. He had a turntable he liked, a TV he watched every evening, and a Qobuz subscription that was effectively wasted because getting to it required four remotes and a degree of patience he no longer had. He wanted one thing that did all of it — and sounded serious.
We pointed him at the Linn Majik DSM. He came back a fortnight later to tell us the turntable had never sounded better.
That tends to be the response, because the Majik DSM is genuinely unusual. Streamer, DAC, preamplifier, and power amplifier in a single chassis — and yet Linn have not simply bundled components together and called it integrated. Everything is designed and built at their Glasgow factory, which means the clocking, upsampling, and amplification stages are engineered to work as one. The result is a coherence you don't get when you assemble the same functions from separate boxes by different manufacturers.
Streaming Done Properly
Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Apple AirPlay 2, and Roon are all supported natively, which covers most listening habits without workarounds. High-resolution audio up to 24-bit/192kHz is handled directly. The Linn app — available on iOS and Android — is well thought through: most people stop reaching for the remote within a day or two of use, which is a more honest endorsement than anything a reviewer could offer.
HDMI with eARC brings television audio into the same signal path. If you've been accepting a soundbar because the alternative seemed complicated, this is the complication that turns out not to be very complicated at all.
Space Optimisation — the Feature That Changes Everything
Most room correction systems work by measuring the damage after it's happened. Space Optimisation works the other way: you input your room's dimensions, construction materials, and speaker placement, and it calculates the correction before a note is played. Bass behaviour, stereo image stability, the way the room's worst tendencies can turn a system that sounds magnificent in a showroom into something disappointing at home — Space Optimisation addresses all of it from first principles rather than as an afterthought.
It is, in practice, the feature that most often makes the difference between a system that sounds good on a good recording and one that sounds good on everything.
Analogue Sources Welcome
The Majik DSM includes a built-in MM phono stage, which means your turntable connects directly and benefits from the same clocking and DAC implementation as every other source. Those already running — or considering — one of the Linn Krane Tonearm or Linn Arko Tonearm options we stock will find the pairing thoroughly considered. The Majik DSM feeds correctly into the Linn ecosystem: for those who later want to explore active speaker territory, the Linn Akubarik Exakt represents a natural progression.
Who Is the Majik DSM For?
People who want a serious system without a serious number of boxes. It's particularly well suited to those integrating music and television audio into one setup, and for anyone whose room has been working against them without them quite knowing why. It is not the right choice if you have a collection of separates you intend to keep — that's a different conversation, and probably one about a dedicated streamer or DAC. But for someone starting fresh, or simplifying what they have, the Majik DSM makes a compelling case for doing less, considerably better.
