SME Model 12 Ex-Demo

The SME Model 12 MK2 is a precision turntable of high mass, precision engineered for pure audio reproduction.

Drive System

The MK2's drive system has been substantially developed from its predecessor. A custom bi-phase AC synchronous motor is controlled by a dedicated Speed Control Unit whose DSP engine generates two independent pure mathematical sine waves, giving total control of frequency, phase relationship and amplitude. These are matched (tuned) to the motor for accuracy to obtain the best possible performance. The speed range is 33.33 and 45rpm with independent memory settings via a switched encoder. Fine pitch speed increments/decrements of +/−0.01% of the selected speed are made by a rotary control on the Speed Control Unit fascia. A separate mains Power Unit keeps the transformer physically separated from both the SCU and the turntable's audio signal cables.

Chassis and Bearing

The chassis and sub-chassis are CNC machined from premium-grade aluminium billet. The sub-chassis is suspended on an advanced isolation system for primary resonance control and houses the main bearing, platter and tonearm. Four fully adjustable feet are mechanically decoupled from the main chassis by isolators, providing further base resonance control. The main spindle is 19mm, precision machined from high chrome tool steel, ground and super-finished, running in a sealed housing with individually fitted sintered bronze bearings.

Platter

The platter is machined from aluminium alloy, weighing over 4.6kg, and is extensionally dampened with iso-damp material on its underside. The top surface is diamond-turned with a fine scroll finish — a process that creates a myriad of tiny fibres to interface with the underside of the vinyl record. A record clamp operating on the reflex principle ensures maximum platter contact even with appreciable record warp.

Crystal Cable Internal Wiring

The Model 12 is equipped with Crystal Cable signal wiring throughout the tonearm — pure mono-crystal silver conductors in miniature format.

Who Is It For?

The SME Model 12 MK2 is for the serious analogue listener who wants a turntable built to engineering tolerances that most manufacturers simply cannot match. If you already own a high-quality cartridge and arm — or you are ready to invest in one — this is a turntable that will not be the limiting factor in your system. It is also a compelling ex-demo opportunity: the same precision engineering at a price that makes it more accessible. Those considering the Gold Note Pianosa or the AVID Acutus Classic Chrome at a similar level should hear this before deciding.
