Rega Planar 1 Turntable
The Rega Planar 1 turntable is the entry point to one of the most respected turntable ranges in the world — and it has won What Hi-Fi?'s Best Turntable award five consecutive years to prove it. Plug and play from the moment it arrives, with the RB110 tonearm factory-fitted and aligned and the Carbon moving magnet cartridge already installed, this is a properly engineered vinyl turntable at the most accessible price in the Rega range.
Connect it to a phono input, lower the stylus, and you are listening. Rega claims setup in under thirty seconds — they are not wrong.
Where the Planar 1 Sits in the Rega Range
The Planar 1 is the entry point to the Rega turntable range. Above it sits the Planar 1 Plus, which adds a built-in phono stage for those whose amplifier lacks a dedicated phono input. Further up, the Planar 3 ECO Special represents the step into the RB330 tonearm and a significantly more capable platform.
The Planar 1 is the right starting point for anyone new to vinyl, returning after a break, or building a second system. It is not a budget deck with a respectable badge — it is a hand-built turntable, designed and assembled in Southend-on-Sea, that outperforms everything near its price.
The only question to ask before choosing the Planar 1 over the Planar 1 Plus is whether your amplifier has a phono input. If it does not, you will need either a separate phono stage or the Planar 1 Plus, which has one built in.
Sound and Performance
Rega's design philosophy rests on a single principle: minimise mass in the signal path, and make what remains as rigid as possible. A lightweight, rigid structure stores less energy and releases less of it back into the signal — which means the music comes through without colouration. The Planar 1 is the clearest expression of that philosophy at an accessible price.
The RB110 tonearm uses ultra-low-friction bearings with factory pre-set bias — no setup required, no opportunity for user error. The Carbon moving magnet cartridge is a genuine MM design with a proper elliptical stylus that tracks records correctly — not a toy, and not an afterthought. The 23mm phenolic resin platter provides a flywheel effect that keeps speed stable, and the brass central bearing is machined to tolerances that rivals at this price cannot match.
The result is a turntable that sounds like music — organised, tonally balanced, and rhythmically sure-footed in the way that Rega turntables at every level tend to be. Bass is defined rather than loose; voices carry presence and body; and records that have been gathering dust for years will surprise you.
Build Quality and Design
The Planar 1 is hand-assembled in Rega's factory in Southend-on-Sea. At 4.2 kg it is deliberately light — the motor cover tray includes integrated cooling, and the foot assembly is isolated to reduce vibration transfer from the surface it sits on.
Available in three finishes: Matt Black, Matt White, and Walnut Effect. The Walnut Effect variant comes with a smoked dust cover; the black and white versions include a clear cover. All three are clean, well-finished objects that look at home in a serious system.
The Planar 1 carries a lifetime limited warranty against manufacturing defects — a statement of confidence in Rega's build quality that few competitors at any price will match.
Connectivity and System Matching
The Planar 1 outputs a standard stereo RCA signal from the RB110 tonearm. A phono stage is required and is not included. The Carbon cartridge is a moving magnet design compatible with any standard MM phono input, including the phono stages built into many integrated amplifiers.
If your amplifier does not have a phono input, the Rega Fono MM MK5 is the natural partner — a multi-award-winning MM phono stage matched to the Planar 1's level of performance, with room for a cartridge upgrade later. If you want to digitise records as well as play them, the Fono Mini A2D adds a USB output for archiving vinyl directly to a computer.
The Planar 1 performs well across a wide range of setups and is forgiving enough not to demand a perfectly matched system — though it will reward one.

Who Is It For?
The Planar 1 is for the listener who wants to start playing vinyl properly — not on a budget deck that will disappoint, but on a turntable that sounds right from the first record and stays satisfying for years. It suits any system, any room, and any genre. If you want to skip the phono stage question entirely, the Planar 1 Plus has that covered.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The Planar 1 is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a system that makes sense for your budget. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can talk you through whether the Planar 1 or another model in the Rega range is the right fit for your room and your system.
