Rega io Integrated Amplifier
The io is Rega's entry-level integrated amplifier — compact, honestly priced, and built on the same amplifier circuit as the award-winning Brio. It delivers 30 watts per channel into 8 ohms, includes a moving magnet phono stage, a headphone socket, and a linear power supply, all in a half-width chassis that takes up less space than most hi-fi amplifiers. What Hi-Fi? named it Best Amplifier Under £400, and it was named Best Amplifier of 2024 by British Audiophile. Those awards reflect what the io does well: it sounds better than its price implies, and it does so without compromise in the areas that matter most.
The circuit is not a simplified version of the Brio — it shares the Brio's amplifier stage directly. What the io trades away for its lower price is inputs: two line-level connections rather than three, and no digital inputs or DAC. For listeners who have a turntable, a single other analogue source, and do not need to connect a TV or streamer, that is not a trade-off at all.
Where the io Sits in the Rega Range
The io is the entry point of the Rega amplifier range. Above it, the Brio MK7 adds a third line-level input, two digital inputs with an onboard DAC, and 50 watts per channel. If you need digital connectivity — for a TV, a DAC, a streamer — the Brio is the right choice from the outset. The io is the right choice if your system is straightforward: turntable, one other analogue source, and a pair of speakers.
The key reason to step up is connectivity, not circuit quality. The io's amplifier circuit is genuinely good; it is not held back by its chassis or its price. If your needs grow — a streamer, a second source — the Brio is where to go.
Sound and Performance
The io carries Rega's amplifier character: rhythmically direct, tonally honest, and musically engaging in a way that invites long listening rather than short demonstrations. The 30-watt output is more capable than the number suggests — Rega's amplifiers are known for sounding more powerful than their rated output implies, particularly with efficient speakers.
The shared Brio circuit means the io benefits from Rega's deep experience in circuit topology. The Sanken output transistors are the same type used in amplifiers at higher price points; the Alps volume potentiometer tracks consistently from channel to channel. The linear power supply avoids the noise artefacts associated with switching supplies, which is a significant contributor to a quiet background and clean low-level detail.
The built-in MM phono stage is designed to work with Rega's cartridge range and performs well at this level. It is not a substitute for a dedicated external phono stage, but for a first vinyl system it is entirely adequate. The headphone output, though modest, allows personal listening without switching amplifiers.
What the io does better than its price suggests is convey the pace and timing of music — the quality Rega calls PRAT. At this price, many competitors produce a louder, more featured amplifier that sounds less musically coherent. The io prioritises the right things.
Build Quality and Design
The io uses a custom-designed chassis that is narrower than a standard full-width component — 180mm wide versus the typical 430–435mm. This is a deliberate design decision, keeping the io suitable for compact systems, shelves, and rooms where a large black box would be out of place. It is 68mm tall and 290mm deep.
At 2.9kg, it is light for an amplifier. The build quality is consistent with Rega's approach: functional, clean, and carefully assembled at their Southend-on-Sea factory. It is not a heavyweight in any literal sense, but it does not feel insubstantial in use. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects applies.
Connectivity and System Matching
The io provides one MM phono input, two line-level RCA inputs, and a front-panel headphone socket. Speaker terminals are on the rear. There is no pre-amplifier output and no record output — the io is a straightforward two-source amplifier.
It is designed to partner naturally with Rega's turntable range: the Planar 1 or Planar 2 sit at the right level for the io, and both can be connected directly via the onboard phono stage. A CD player, DAC, or streaming device occupies one of the two line inputs.
Speaker matching is important at 30 watts. The io works best with speakers of 87dB sensitivity or above — it will drive less sensitive speakers, but the lower the sensitivity, the less dynamic headroom the amplifier has. Efficient bookshelf speakers from the likes of Wharfedale, Q Acoustics, or Rega's own speaker range are natural partners.

Who Is It For?
The io is for the listener building their first serious hi-fi system around a Rega turntable — or for anyone who wants a compact, award-winning amplifier with a phono stage and does not need digital inputs. It rewards efficient speakers and a well-chosen source. Listeners who need a DAC, a third input, or more than 30 watts should look at the Brio MK7.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The io is available to hear in our Norwich showroom; call ahead and we will have it set up with a matching Rega turntable and speakers. When you get in touch, you will be speaking to Dave or Chris — both experienced hi-fi specialists who can advise on whether the io or a step up in the range is the right fit for your system and your room.
Reach them at dave@martinshifi.co.uk, chris@martinshifi.co.uk, info@martinshifi.co.uk, call on 01603 627010, or WhatsApp Dave or Chris directly on 07554 687137 for a quick answer after your purchase. You can read more about who we are and how we work on our Why Martin's page. We are at 85–91 Ber Street, Norwich, NR1 3EY, open six days a week.
