Rega Ania Pro Moving Coil Cartridge
The Ania Pro builds on the Ania's moving coil architecture with a single but significant change: the stylus profile moves from an elliptical cut to the Vital profile nude diamond. The Vital profile has a smaller contact patch in the radial direction than an elliptical tip — the same principle that distinguishes the fine line from an elliptical in the MM range, applied here at MC level. Greater contact precision means the stylus reads the finest groove modulations more accurately, with lower distortion and better high-frequency resolution, particularly on the inner grooves of heavily modulated records.
The generator is the same fundamental design as the Ania: hand-wound micro coil on an iron micro cross, super high-powered neodymium magnet, PPS body, Rega three-point mounting. The output voltage is approximately 350μV — well below what an MM-only phono stage can handle, requiring a dedicated MC-capable stage. What changes at the Ania Pro is the precision of groove contact, and in a system capable of resolving it, that change is clearly audible.
Where the Ania Pro Sits in the Rega Range
The Ania Pro sits between the Ania and the Aphelion 2 in the Rega MC range.
The step from the Ania to the Ania Pro is analogous to the step from Nd5 to Nd7 in the MM range: the generator remains essentially the same, but the stylus profile changes in a way that has direct consequences for resolution and distortion. The Vital profile's smaller radial contact patch traces high-frequency groove modulations with greater accuracy than an elliptical, particularly on the inner grooves where the demands on the stylus are most acute. This is a stylus geometry upgrade, not a generator upgrade — the MC architecture and output characteristics are shared between the two cartridges.
Above the Ania Pro, the Aphelion 2 represents a more fundamental step: a boron cantilever replacing aluminium, a fine line nude diamond replacing the Vital profile, a zero-tolerance machined aluminium body replacing the moulded PPS, and an iron micro cross that is 50% smaller, reducing generator mass and improving tracking precision. The Aphelion 2 is Rega's reference MC. The Ania Pro is the correct choice for most systems before the reference level becomes the relevant consideration.
Sound and Performance
The Vital profile stylus is the defining characteristic of the Ania Pro. It has a smaller minor radius in the radial direction than an elliptical profile, which reduces the contact patch width and allows the stylus to follow groove modulations at higher frequencies with greater accuracy. The consequence is audible in direct comparison: treble that is cleaner and less distorted on musical transients, better definition on sibilants and high-frequency overtones, and lower distortion on the inner grooves of a heavily modulated LP where an elliptical stylus begins to lose tracking accuracy.
The MC generator below that stylus provides the same fundamental character as the Ania: low moving mass, fast transient response, and the slightly more direct and immediate presentation that distinguishes MC from MM at comparable price points. The hand-wound micro coil on the iron micro cross moves through the field of the neodymium magnet with minimal inertia — this is the architectural advantage that moving coil brings over moving magnet, and it is preserved intact in the Ania Pro. The Vital profile ensures the stylus reading that signal is doing so with the contact precision that the generator deserves.
The practical lifetime of the cartridge benefits from the Vital profile as well. A more precise contact geometry traces the groove with less friction than a broader stylus, which means less wear per play — both on the stylus itself and on the record.
Build Quality and Design
The Ania Pro uses the same glass-filled PPS body as the Ania, with a rigid protective cover designed via CAD to protect the internal fine wiring during fitting and installation. The micro coil is wound in-house at Rega's Southend-on-Sea facility by skilled technicians. All Ania Pro cartridges are handmade. Lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.
Connectivity and System Matching
The Ania Pro uses Rega's three-point mounting system, fitting the RB220 upwards. At approximately 350μV output and 1.75–2.00g tracking force, it requires an MC-capable phono stage. The Rega Fono MC MK4 is the dedicated standalone option; the MC stages built into the Elicit MK5 and Aethos are both well-matched at this level. A better external MC stage will allow the Ania Pro to show more of what it can do.
The natural turntable partners are the Planar 6 and Planar 8, where the Vital profile's additional resolving capability will be fully deployed. On a Planar 3, the Ania is probably the more proportionate choice; from the Planar 6 upwards, the Ania Pro is worth the step.

Who Is It For?
The Ania Pro is for the listener running a Planar 6, Planar 8, or equivalent mid-to-high-level Rega turntable who wants MC performance with the added resolution of the Vital profile stylus over the Ania's elliptical. It is the correct MC choice for most systems before the Aphelion 2 level becomes warranted, and the appropriate step for those who have heard the Ania and want more groove contact precision without moving to reference MC. Those running a Naia or Planar 10 should consider the Aphelion 2.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968, and the Rega range has been part of what we do for years. We are still family-run — Elizabeth Gould runs the business today — and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
Dave or Chris can advise on whether the Ania Pro is the right cartridge for your turntable, and on the phono stage matching at this level.
