The QUAD Elegan 1 is a compact two-way loudspeaker designed for smaller listening rooms, apartments and dedicated two-channel systems. It sits at the entry point of QUAD's Elegan series — a range built around a single, quietly stated conviction: that a loudspeaker should remain enjoyable over hours of listening, not just impress in the first five minutes.

Designed for Long Listening Sessions

Many loudspeakers are engineered to create immediate excitement — boosted bass, exaggerated detail, a forward presentation that catches attention on a brief audition. QUAD took a different approach with the Elegan. Every design decision was made in service of a presentation that remains engaging over time. Vocals retain natural warmth and texture. Instruments occupy believable space. Dynamics are handled with restraint rather than exaggeration, and detail emerges naturally from the recording rather than being pushed forward artificially. The result is a loudspeaker that encourages longer listening sessions rather than shorter, more cautious ones.

Woven Kevlar Cone Drivers

The Elegan 1 uses woven Kevlar cone drivers, chosen for their combination of low mass, rigidity and controlled self-damping. Low mass means the driver responds quickly to musical transients — the leading edge of a note is reproduced accurately rather than smeared. Rigidity prevents the cone from flexing and introducing its own colouration into the sound. Self-damping controls how the cone behaves when it stops moving, reducing overhang and keeping the midrange honest. Together, these properties produce tonal neutrality across the frequencies where the ear is most sensitive.

Precision Waveguide and Fabric Dome Tweeter

A precision waveguide surrounds the fabric dome tweeter, controlling the dispersion of high frequencies throughout the room. Rather than allowing the tweeter to radiate unevenly — producing a narrow sweet spot or aggressive off-axis behaviour — the waveguide shapes the sound field so that performance remains consistent wherever you sit. The fabric dome itself is a considered choice: softer than a metal dome, it avoids the kind of high-frequency resonance that can make extended listening uncomfortable.

Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks

The crossover network is engineered to Linkwitz-Riley alignment — a design approach that ensures the individual drive units sum correctly at the crossover frequency, behaving as a single coherent acoustic system rather than two separate drivers operating in the same cabinet. The result is smooth integration between the bass/midrange driver and the tweeter, without the phase anomalies or frequency response irregularities that a less carefully designed crossover can introduce.

QUAD Airflow™ Bass Reflex System

The Elegan 1 uses QUAD's Airflow™ bass reflex system, which reduces port turbulence to deliver deeper, cleaner bass with greater control. Bass reflex designs can suffer from chuffing and colouration when the port is poorly designed — particularly at higher listening levels. QUAD's Airflow™ approach addresses this directly, allowing the compact cabinet to produce bass performance that would be unexpected from its dimensions.

Cabinet Design

The cabinet is internally braced to minimise resonance. An unbraced cabinet vibrates sympathetically with the drivers, adding its own character to the sound — something that becomes more apparent on sustained bass notes and complex orchestral passages. The Elegan 1 is available in all-Matte Black or real Walnut veneer, both finished to a standard that sits comfortably in contemporary interiors. The styling draws quiet references to QUAD's heritage without leaning on nostalgia — understated, and visually compatible with QUAD's current electronics range including the QUAD 3 integrated amplifier.

Who Is It For?

The Elegan 1 is the right choice for listeners who want genuine audiophile performance in a compact form — those building a first serious stereo system, those with smaller rooms or apartments, or those who have simply grown tired of loudspeakers that impress briefly and fatigue quickly. It is not a loudspeaker for those who want room-filling scale or deep bass extension in a large space — for that, the Elegan 2 floorstander is the more appropriate choice. But for focused, coherent, long-term listening in a well-matched system, the Elegan 1 makes a strong case for itself.
