The 2M Blue is Ortofon's serious entry into the moving magnet category — the cartridge that separates listeners who own a decent turntable from those who are actually using it. A nude elliptical diamond stylus, quad-coil generator with split pole pins, and OFC copper wire throughout: these are not details that appear on budget designs, and their combined effect is audible from the first groove.
The Nude Elliptical Stylus
The distinction between a bonded and a nude stylus matters more than many expect. Where a bonded design attaches the diamond to a carrier, the nude elliptical diamond is shaped directly from a raw stone and mounted to the aluminium cantilever without an intermediate mass. The result is a stylus that follows groove modulations with greater precision and lower effective tip mass — which translates directly to finer retrieval of high-frequency detail and a cleaner presentation of transients.
Quad-Coil Generator
Ortofon's quad-coil system with split pole pins and OFC coil wire is the heart of the 2M Blue's output. The four-coil arrangement reduces noise and improves channel separation — 25 dB at 1 kHz — while the split pole pins minimise magnetic interference between channels. What you hear is a wider, more precisely defined stereo image and a quieter background between notes.
