Linn Utopik Power Supply Upgrade
The Utopik is Linn's current-generation switch-mode power supply — the standard fitted to Linn's newest products, and the upgrade that brings earlier hardware up to that standard. At £1,350, it is not an accessory in the conventional sense. It is a precisely engineered power supply whose Intelligent Valley Switching topology, active Power Factor Correction, and multiple isolated precision-regulated output rails represent a meaningful and measurable improvement over the supplies fitted to earlier Linn components — and whose effect on the components it powers is audible, consistent, and cumulative across the frequency range. Where power supply quality is concerned, Linn's position is unequivocal: the stability, cleanliness, and precision of the supply that feeds an audio circuit has a direct and measurable effect on what that circuit produces. The Utopik is the fullest current expression of that principle.
Every Linn component that receives the Utopik upgrade is brought to the same power supply standard as a newly manufactured unit. This is not a close approximation — it is the identical supply, fitted by a Linn-authorised dealer to the same specification as the factory installation. For owners of Klimax, Selekt, and Akurate hardware who have not yet moved to Utopik, the upgrade closes the gap between existing hardware and current-production equivalents without requiring the component to be replaced.
Intelligent Valley Switching — Eliminating Interference at the Source
Conventional switch-mode power supplies switch at arbitrary points in the mains cycle. That arbitrary switching generates electromagnetic interference — spikes of radiated energy whose frequency and character are unpredictable, and which propagate into the audio circuits the supply is feeding. Intelligent Valley Switching eliminates this by switching at specific, controlled points in the mains waveform — at the valleys, where the current crossing is smoothest and the energy in the transition is lowest. The interference that arbitrary switching generates is not reduced. It is not managed. It is not avoided by screening. It simply does not occur, because the switching events that would create it are timed to the point in the cycle where the conditions for interference generation do not exist.
The practical consequence is an electromagnetic environment inside the component that is quieter — measurably and meaningfully — than what a conventional SMPS topology produces. Audio circuits that previously operated in the presence of supply-borne interference now operate without it. What they reveal as a result is not subtly different. It is the difference between a circuit performing within its design intent and a circuit working against its own power supply.
Active Power Factor Correction — A Cleaner Load on the Mains
The Utopik incorporates active Power Factor Correction — a circuit that manages the way the supply draws current from the mains, ensuring that current draw follows the mains voltage waveform as closely as possible rather than drawing it in the large, abrupt pulses that an uncorrected switch-mode supply produces. Uncorrected supplies create reactive loading on the mains that propagates as interference into other components sharing the same circuit. Active PFC eliminates this: the Utopik draws current smoothly, imposes no reactive loading on the mains, and contributes nothing to the electromagnetic environment of the system. Where multiple Linn components are powered from the same circuit — as they will be in any integrated Linn system — the combined effect of each component running an Utopik supply is additive. The system gets quieter as each component is upgraded, not just the component most recently fitted.
Multiple Isolated Output Rails — No Cross-Contamination
Different circuit sections within a Linn component draw current at different rates, at different times, with different transient demands. In a supply with shared output rails, current demand from one circuit section appears as a voltage fluctuation on the rail that other sections share — a fluctuation that those other sections receive as noise. The Utopik uses multiple precision-regulated and fully isolated output rails: each circuit section receives power from its own independent rail, regulated independently, with no electrical path between rails through which one section's current demands can reach another. Digital clocking circuitry, analogue output stages, and display circuits — each draws from its own supply without awareness of the others.
The output voltage variation under load across all rails is below 0.1%. Efficiency in typical use exceeds 90%, and the Utopik generates sufficiently little heat that passive cooling is adequate throughout — no fan, no heatsink in the airflow, no thermal noise source within the component's enclosure.
What the Utopik Upgrades
The Utopik is available for the following Linn components:
- Klimax DSM (all models)
- Klimax DS (all models)
- Klimax System Hub (all models)
- Selekt DSM (all models)
- Akurate DSM (all models)
- Akurate DS (all models)
- Akurate Exaktbox-6 and Exaktbox-10
- Kustom DSM Z4 and Z8
- Majik DS (all models)
- Klimax Radikal
- Klimax Exaktbox (pre-October 2025)
This covers the substantial majority of Linn's catalogue over the past two decades. If your component is not listed, contact us — upgrade availability evolves, and we will confirm the current position.
Installation — Authorised Dealer Only
The Utopik is not user-serviceable. The component is sent to us, the power supply is fitted by our Linn-trained technicians, and the unit is returned to you. Typical turnaround is one to two weeks. The upgrade is covered by full Linn warranty, and the unit is designed and manufactured in Scotland — the same facility responsible for the Klimax LP12, the Linn Klimax System Hub, and the Linn 360 Active Loudspeaker.

Who Is It For?
Any owner of an eligible Linn component whose power supply has not yet been upgraded to Utopik. The Linn Klimax System Hub is supplied with Utopik as standard in current production — if yours predates that, this is the most direct route to closing the gap. For Selekt and Akurate owners, the same applies: the Utopik brings existing hardware to the power supply standard of a current-production unit at a fraction of the replacement cost. It is particularly relevant to owners who are keeping their Linn system for the long term and want it performing at its current-generation best — the upgrade cost is substantially less than replacement, and the performance gain is genuine, measurable, and consistent with Linn's own engineering position on power supply quality.
Buying from Martins Hi-Fi
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
We carry out Linn upgrades in-house and can advise on whether the Utopik is the right next step for your specific component — or whether there is a higher-priority upgrade to consider first. If you own multiple eligible Linn components, the question of sequencing and prioritisation is one we are well placed to answer.
When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
