Six-Channel Active Drive

In a passive speaker system, the crossover sits inside the cabinet. It divides the signal between drive units using resistors, capacitors, and inductors — components that add phase shift and insertion loss, and that interact with the impedance of the driver in ways that cannot be fully corrected. Active crossovers, by contrast, divide the signal before amplification, at line level, in the digital domain. In a Linn Exakt system, that division happens in the DSM, with crossover parameters calculated specifically for the speaker model. Each amplifier channel then sees only the frequency band it is assigned to drive.

The result is cleaner, more dynamic bass, better integration between drivers, and substantially improved low-level resolution — the kind of fine detail in recorded music that a passive crossover typically obscures. With six channels available from a single Majik 6100, a three-way active stereo system is achievable without the complexity of multiple separate amplifiers.
