Linn LP12 Servicing & Upgrades
The Linn LP12 is one of the longest-lived and most consistently developed turntables in the history of recorded music — a design that has been in continuous production since 1972, refined and improved by Linn across more than five decades without ever departing from the fundamental architecture that makes it work. It is also, uniquely among turntables at any price point, a product whose performance can be improved incrementally and indefinitely through a structured programme of servicing and upgrades that Linn has developed and maintained with the same rigour it applies to new product development. The LP12 you own today is not the LP12 you need to keep. With the right service and the right upgrades, it can become something considerably better.
Martins Hi-Fi has been servicing and upgrading LP12s in Norwich for decades. We know this turntable in its every configuration — from the earliest belt-drive variants to the current Klimax LP12 at the summit of the range — and we carry out every service and upgrade with the precision and care that a mechanism of this quality demands.
LP12 Servicing
An LP12 that has not been serviced in some years will not be performing as it should. The sub-chassis suspension requires periodic adjustment to maintain the correct mechanical relationship between its components. The bearing requires fresh oil. The drive belt deteriorates with age and use. The motor mounting and speed circuitry benefit from inspection and, where necessary, adjustment or replacement. Left unattended, these elements compound each other's shortcomings; addressed systematically, they restore the LP12 to the performance standard it was designed to achieve.
We offer two levels of service:
Mini Service — £130
A focused service addressing the elements most commonly in need of attention: suspension setup and alignment, bearing oil replenishment, belt replacement where required, and a full mechanical check of the turntable's operating condition.
Major Service — £260
A comprehensive rebuild covering everything in the Mini Service, plus full disassembly, cleaning, inspection of the motor and speed control circuitry, arm rewiring check, platter inspection, and complete reassembly and setup to Linn's current specification. Recommended for LP12s that have not been serviced for five or more years, or for any LP12 being prepared for upgrade work.
Every service begins with an investigation — assessing the mechanical age and overall condition of the turntable, identifying any previous upgrades or non-standard replacement parts, and establishing a clear picture of what the LP12 requires before any work begins.
LP12 Upgrades — The Performance Pathway
Linn has developed a structured five-stage upgrade pathway for the LP12 — a sequence of improvements that builds the turntable's performance systematically, each stage delivering a meaningful and audible improvement in isolation and cumulatively transforming the LP12 into something that bears only a genealogical relationship to its starting point.
The upgrades can be performed in any order, though Linn's recommended sequence reflects the greatest performance return at each stage. The key upgrade components available through Martins Hi-Fi include:
Linn Karousel Bearing Kit — Linn's current-specification main bearing, delivering tighter tolerances, lower noise floor, and improved speed stability compared to all previous LP12 bearing assemblies. The single most impactful upgrade available for most LP12s.
Linn Arko Tonearm — Linn's entry-level tonearm for the LP12, bringing the current Linn arm geometry and bearing standards to the base of the upgrade path.
Linn Krane Tonearm — Linn's Akurate-tier tonearm, a substantial step in resolution and dynamic precision for LP12s already at an intermediate upgrade level.
Linn Bedrok Plinth — Linn's current-specification plinth, providing improved rigidity and resonance control as the mechanical foundation for higher-level upgrade work.
For those building towards the highest possible LP12 performance, the Linn Klimax LP12 and Linn LP12 Selekt Turntable represent the summit of the range — the Klimax LP12 incorporating every current Linn LP12 technology in a single, fully optimised build.
Planning Your LP12 Upgrade
No two LP12s are in exactly the same condition or at exactly the same point in the upgrade path. The right starting point — and the right next step — depends on the mechanical age of your turntable, the upgrades already fitted, and the rest of your system. We will assess your LP12 honestly and advise on the sequence of work that will deliver the greatest performance improvement for your budget, at each stage.
