Linn Lingo Power Supply for the LP12 Sondek
The Lingo is the definitive first upgrade for the Linn LP12 Majik — a dedicated outboard power supply that replaces the internal Majik supply with a precision motor control system derived directly from Linn's flagship Radikal. It has held that position in the LP12 upgrade hierarchy since Linn first introduced outboard power supplies for the Sondek, and the current iteration represents the most capable Lingo yet. For any LP12 Majik owner wondering where to begin, the answer has not changed: the Lingo is the upgrade that transforms the character of the deck, and it does so by addressing the most fundamental variable in analogue replay — the consistency and precision with which the platter rotates.
Why Speed Stability Is Everything
A vinyl record encodes music as physical modulations in the groove wall. The cartridge reads those modulations and translates them into an electrical signal. If the platter is not rotating at a precisely constant speed, every note in the recording is subtly wrong — in pitch, in timing, in the relationship between instruments. Speed variation of even a fraction of a per cent is audible to most listeners, even those who would not identify it as such. Music loses its rhythmic conviction; the performance becomes harder to follow; something indefinite but important is missing.
The LP12 Majik's internal power supply does an adequate job of driving the motor. The Lingo does a considerably better one — not marginally, but fundamentally, by monitoring and correcting platter speed on every single revolution rather than simply applying a fixed drive voltage and trusting the motor to hold position.
How the Lingo Works
The current Lingo incorporates a speed management system that actively monitors platter rotation and applies corrections continuously — not just at startup. When the LP12 is powered on, the Lingo auto-calibrates to the specific motor it is driving, optimising its control parameters for that individual unit. This means the Lingo is not applying a generic drive signal; it is applying the correct drive signal for your motor, every time.
The upgrade includes a new 12V AC motor. This is not a peripheral detail — the new motor, driven precisely by the Lingo's control circuitry, is integral to the improvement the upgrade delivers. The Lingo's on-board control circuit fits internally within the LP12 deck, paired with an external slimline power supply unit compact enough to sit unobtrusively on a shelf or behind a rack. Dual-speed operation — 33⅓ and 45 rpm — is supported, with speed selection handled from the Lingo's external unit.
The improvement the Lingo makes to an LP12 is audible in precise and consistent ways: improved pitch stability, yes — but the broader effect is that music acquires rhythmic precision and timing clarity that the standard supply cannot provide. The attack and decay of notes are more clearly defined. The space between notes is more informative. The performance as a whole is more certain of itself. It is the kind of upgrade that is easy to hear and, once heard, difficult to accept being without.
After the Linn Karousel Bearing Kit, the Lingo is the single most significant upgrade available to the LP12 Majik owner. Linn's own hierarchy places the power supply as the first upgrade to address — and the Lingo is that upgrade.
Compatibility
The Lingo is compatible with the Linn LP12 Majik Turntable and Linn LP12 Selekt Turntable specifications. It replaces and supersedes all previous Lingo models. If your LP12 already carries an earlier Lingo, the current version is a worthwhile upgrade in its own right — the motor control architecture has been substantially developed across generations.
Above the Lingo in Linn's power supply hierarchy sits the Utopik — Linn's top-specification switch-mode supply — and the Klimax Radikal, the motor controller fitted to the Linn Klimax LP12 Turntable.

Who Is It For?
The Lingo is for the LP12 Majik owner who wants the most meaningful single improvement available to them. It is also for anyone commissioning a new LP12 Majik build who wants to step beyond the standard specification from the outset — in which case we specify and fit the Lingo as part of the initial build at our Norwich workshop. If you are considering the Linn LP12 Selekt Turntable, note that the Lingo is already incorporated into that specification — the Selekt is the natural next destination for Majik owners ready to make a broader step up.
Buying from Martins Hi-Fi
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
We set up and service LP12s properly — not simply supply the parts. If you are upgrading an existing Majik, bring the deck in and we will fit the Lingo correctly, balance the suspension, and ensure the deck is performing exactly as it should before it leaves.
When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
