Linn Kustom DSM Multi-Zone Network Music Player

The Kustom DSM is Linn's custom installation streaming platform — a 1U rack-mount unit that brings Linn's DSM streaming technology into high-end residential and commercial installations where audio quality cannot be compromised by the demands of multi-zone distribution. It is not a consumer product adapted for installation use. It is a purpose-built, rack-native component designed from the outset for environments where the source is managed centrally, distributed to multiple rooms, and controlled by a third-party home automation system. In that context, the Kustom DSM is without a credible alternative: it delivers genuine Linn streaming quality — the same architecture that underpins the Selekt and Klimax DSM ranges — in a format that integrates into any professional installation without friction.

The Kustom DSM is a source component. It provides line-level analogue outputs for each zone, to be connected to whatever amplification the installation specifies. It does not include amplification or speakers. That absence of constraint is deliberate — the Kustom DSM integrates with any amplifier and loudspeaker combination the installer or customer requires, rather than imposing a single-brand solution on the entire signal chain downstream.

Two Variants: Z4 and Z8

The Kustom DSM is available in two configurations, both occupying a standard 1U 19-inch rack space.

The Z4 contains two independent streamers, each capable of serving two zones independently — four zones in total. The Z8 contains four independent streamers serving up to eight zones. In both variants, each streamer operates entirely independently: sources, content, and volume are all controlled per zone, and what is playing in one zone has no bearing on any other. Front panel indicators display the operational status of each zone and each streamer at a glance — a practical and important feature in an installation context where visibility of system status is part of the brief, not an afterthought.

Multiple Kustom DSM units can be combined for larger installations where eight zones are insufficient. The architecture scales without compromise to the individual zone quality that defines the Kustom DSM's proposition.

From October 2023, all Kustom DSM units ship with the Utopik power supply as standard — the Valley Switching supply used in Linn's standalone DSM components, bringing improved noise performance and lower noise floor across all zones compared to earlier production units.

Connectivity and Control Integration

Each streamer within the Kustom DSM carries its own input set: one analogue RCA, one SPDIF coaxial, one Toslink optical, and one HDMI ARC input. Zone outputs are stereo RCA line-level, with independent volume, standby, and mute per zone. Network streaming requires a wired 100Base-T Ethernet connection — Wi-Fi is not fitted in the rack-mount format, which is the correct decision for a professional installation where network reliability is not negotiable.

The Kustom DSM is Crestron and Control4 certified, with dedicated, purpose-built drivers available for both platforms. It also integrates with Linn's own Kazoo control application. For custom installation projects where a third-party control system is already specified, the Crestron and Control4 integration is direct, well-tested, and mature — not an approximation via generic IP control but a certified, driver-supported integration that behaves predictably within both ecosystems.

Streaming service support covers Tidal, Qobuz, Spotify Connect, Deezer, and Roon Ready (from Davaar 106). AirPlay and AirPlay 2 are supported via Songcast and NetAux. Each zone is independently controllable from any of these sources simultaneously — zone one can be playing Tidal at full resolution while zone two plays a Spotify Connect stream, with no cross-zone dependency or interference.

Who Is It For?

The Kustom DSM is for custom installation projects where Linn streaming quality is the requirement across multiple rooms, and where the audio system must integrate with a wider home control architecture rather than operating independently. It suits high-end residential projects, hospitality environments, and commercial installations where Control4 or Crestron control is already specified and Linn streaming performance is non-negotiable. It is not the right product for a dedicated two-channel listening room — the Linn Selekt DSM Classic Hub or Linn Klimax System Hub serve that requirement properly. The Kustom DSM's value lies in the specific and powerful combination of Linn streaming quality, zone independence, certified control system integration, and rack-mount format — a combination that no other manufacturer currently matches.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Kustom DSM is a product we supply both as part of wider installation projects and directly to customers designing their own rack systems. If you are specifying a Kustom DSM, it is worth a conversation about the full system context — zone count, control platform, amplification, and room layout — to ensure the configuration is correct from the outset rather than revised mid-installation.

When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
