Linn Adikt Moving Magnet Cartridge

The Adikt is Linn's moving magnet cartridge — the standard-fit cartridge on the LP12 Majik MM specification, and the product that defines what a well-engineered moving magnet design can achieve when stylus geometry is taken as seriously as it is in cartridges costing considerably more. At £631, the Adikt is not a budget proposition dressed in LP12 clothing. It is a genuine design decision — a cartridge in which the choice of Gyger II line-contact stylus profile represents a meaningful engineering commitment to groove tracing accuracy that most moving magnet cartridges at this price point do not make, and one that rewards the investment in the LP12 platform beneath it with a level of retrieval consistent with what that platform is capable of.

The Adikt produces 6.5mV at the standard 5cm/s measurement velocity — a high output voltage that is compatible with the MM phono stage built into most integrated amplifiers, as well as with any dedicated MM phono stage. No additional gain stage or step-up transformer is required. This is the practical advantage of the moving magnet format at its most direct: wide compatibility, a user-replaceable stylus assembly, and robust reliability over a long service life.

Gyger II Line-Contact Stylus — Beyond Elliptical

The Adikt's defining characteristic is the Gyger II stylus. This is a line-contact profile — a geometry developed by Fritz Gyger that places a narrow, precisely shaped contact patch along the groove wall rather than the broader, more spherical contact of a standard elliptical tip. The difference in groove tracing ability between a line-contact and an elliptical profile is not marginal. A line-contact profile follows the undulations cut into the groove wall — particularly at the high frequencies where modulation is tightest and most demanding — with a precision that an elliptical cannot match.

The practical results are audible and consistent: improved high-frequency extension, better retrieval of fine detail in complex musical passages, and a more accurate presentation of the recorded signal from the inner groove — where the increasing track curvature places the greatest demands on the stylus. The Gyger II is not a stylus profile typically found at this price point in a standard-fit cartridge. Its presence on the Adikt reflects Linn's position that the correct stylus specification for the LP12 platform is the correct specification regardless of where a cartridge sits in the range.

Line-contact profiles also distribute the tracking load over a larger contact area than a spherical or elliptical tip — an advantage that extends the service life of both stylus and record. The stylus geometry that retrieves more from the groove also damages it less in doing so.

Replaceable Stylus Assembly

The Adikt's stylus assembly is user-replaceable — a practical advantage that matters over the cartridge's service life. When the Gyger II stylus reaches the end of its useful life, the entire stylus unit is replaced rather than the cartridge body. This reduces the long-term cost of ownership and ensures that a replacement stylus is available from stock without the lead time that a factory rebuild or return service would require. At the Adikt's position in the LP12 range — as the standard-fit cartridge on a Majik MM, and the correct replacement when that stylus reaches the end of its life — this is a relevant practical consideration as well as an engineering one.

Body Construction

The Adikt body is built for minimal resonance. The former-less coil armature and aluminium tube cantilever are consistent with Linn's cartridge design philosophy throughout the range — rigidity at the body, transmission without contamination at the cantilever, and a signal path that carries the stylus motion to the generator without structural vibration adding its own character. Gold pin connections at 1.2mm provide consistent, low-resistance contact at the tonearm headshell. Mounting is standard half-inch centres — compatible with the Linn Krane Tonearm and with any tonearm accepting standard cartridge geometry.

Adikt and the LP12 Upgrade Path

The Adikt is the correct starting point for an LP12 Majik MM build, and the correct replacement when its stylus requires changing. It is also the appropriate choice for any quality turntable at this level where an MM phono stage is already in place and the phono stage budget does not extend to the higher-gain requirements of a moving coil design.

When the system has developed to the point where moving coil performance is the next meaningful step, the natural progression within the LP12 range is the Linn Krystal — which introduces moving coil architecture at Majik specification — or, for those whose system is already at a higher level, the Linn Kendo on an Arko-equipped build. Both require a phono stage with proper MC gain; if an MM-only stage is currently in use, the Adikt remains the correct and fully capable choice until that changes.

The Linn LP12 Majik Turntable page covers the full Majik specification context and the relationship between the Adikt and the rest of the platform.

Who Is It For?

The Adikt is for the LP12 Majik owner — as standard fit, as a stylus replacement, or as a considered choice for a new build at Majik specification where an MM phono stage is in place. It is also the right choice for any quality turntable at this level where moving magnet compatibility, a replaceable stylus, and a line-contact stylus profile are the correct priorities. It is not a cartridge to outgrow quickly — the Gyger II stylus profile performs at a level that will reveal the quality of the system beneath it, and the Adikt is fully capable of serving an LP12 Majik well for its entire service life.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

Correct setup matters with any cartridge, and the Adikt is no exception — tracking force, cartridge alignment, and anti-skate all need to be set correctly for it to perform as designed. When buying a replacement Adikt stylus or cartridge, it is worth considering whether a full LP12 service is due at the same time — correct suspension balance makes a significant difference to how any cartridge performs, and if the deck has not been serviced recently, combining the two is the most efficient approach.
