KEF XIO Soundbar

The KEF XIO is KEF's most ambitious soundbar — a 5.1.2 channel system that brings the acoustic engineering principles of KEF's dedicated loudspeaker range to bear on home cinema sound reproduction, without requiring separate surround speakers, height channels, or subwoofer placement. Twelve individual drivers, each powered by its own dedicated Class D amplifier, are housed in a single 1210 mm aluminium-topped cabinet — delivering 820W of instantaneous power, a frequency response that reaches 34 Hz without external bass support, and full Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and MPEG-H decoding. The XIO is not a compromise between convenience and performance. It is an argument that those two things need not be in conflict.

KEF Uni-Q MX — The Point-Source Array in Miniature

The XIO's midrange and high-frequency reproduction is handled by six Uni-Q MX drivers — a miniaturised version of the coaxial dual-diaphragm array that defines KEF's loudspeaker philosophy. Each Uni-Q MX unit measures 50 mm in diameter and incorporates a mechanical crossover — no electronic crossover network between the tweeter and midrange elements — maintaining the Single Apparent Source integrity of the Uni-Q concept at a scale that allows six drivers to be deployed within a single slim enclosure. Three Uni-Q MX units face forward, forming the left, centre, and right front stage; two face upward for Dolby Atmos height channel reproduction that bounces off the ceiling to create the perception of sound arriving from above; and one — activated only when the XIO is wall-mounted — provides a dedicated centre channel for dialogue when the forward-firing array's output geometry changes in proximity to the wall surface. Two additional 50 mm full-range drivers fire from the sides of the cabinet, delivering surround channel information that extends the sound field beyond the physical width of the enclosure.

P185 LF Drivers and VECO Technology

The XIO's bass reproduction is delivered by four P185 drivers — each measuring 50 × 180 mm — arranged in two back-to-back force-cancelling pairs within the cabinet. The P185 designation reflects the driver's equivalent piston area to a 185 mm circular cone; the flat, elongated form factor allows four drivers of this acoustic capability to be housed within the XIO's 70 mm cabinet height. Each P185 driver uses P-Flex surround technology — the same origami-inspired pleated surround design used in KEF's KC92 subwoofer — which maintains structural integrity and consistent performance at extreme excursion levels.

VECO — Velocity Control Technology — is integrated into the P185 driver system. VECO uses a sensor embedded within the driver to monitor cone motion in real time, feeding that data back into a negative feedback loop within the amplifier stage. Where conventional amplifiers correct distortion after it has occurred, VECO corrects it continuously and pre-emptively — reducing distortion and increasing the linearity of cone motion at any output level. The result is bass reproduction that remains controlled, articulate, and free from the bloat and overhang that limits soundbar bass performance at high output levels, and a frequency response that reaches 34 Hz without external subwoofer support.

Music Integrity Engine® for Cinema

The XIO's DSP architecture is governed by KEF's Music Integrity Engine® for Cinema — MIE — the same processing platform found in the LS60 Wireless and KC92 subwoofer, adapted for multichannel home cinema signal processing. The MIE for Cinema handles Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, Sony 360 Reality Audio, and MPEG-H decoding natively, and includes KEF's proprietary up-mixing algorithms — which expand mono and stereo sources into spatialised multichannel presentations, and two-channel content into a full 5.1.2 sound field — without the processing artefacts that lesser up-mixing implementations introduce. Five listening modes — Movie, Music, Dialogue, Night, and Standard — are available via the KEF Connect app or the included remote control, with a full Expert EQ available for those who wish to apply manual adjustments to the XIO's output. Dialogue Mode applies targeted vocal frequency enhancement and background noise reduction — a practical refinement for television viewing that improves speech intelligibility without altering the overall tonal character of the presentation.

Intelligent Placement Technology

The XIO incorporates built-in microphones that allow Intelligent Placement Technology — IPT — to detect whether the soundbar is resting on a shelf or mounted on a wall, and adapt the driver configuration and output accordingly. In shelf mode, all six Uni-Q MX drivers are active in their standard configuration. In wall-mount mode, the sixth Uni-Q MX — the dedicated centre driver — is activated to compensate for the change in the forward-firing array's output geometry in proximity to the wall, and the overall frequency response is re-optimised for the acoustic effect of boundary reinforcement. IPT requires no manual calibration — it operates automatically at startup, requiring only that the XIO be placed in its final position before the first use.

W2 Wireless Platform and Connectivity

The XIO is built on KEF's W2 wireless platform — supporting Wi-Fi 6 across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz bands, Bluetooth 5.3, Apple AirPlay 2, Google Cast, and UPnP/DLNA. Streaming services available natively include Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz Connect, Amazon Music, Deezer, HIGHRESAUDIO, Internet Radio, and Podcasts. Network streaming supports PCM up to 384 kHz/24-bit; HDMI eARC up to 192 kHz/24-bit; optical input up to 96 kHz/24-bit.

Wired connectivity is equally comprehensive: HDMI 2.1 eARC for direct television connection at the highest supported resolution, TOSLINK optical, RCA subwoofer output for connection to an active subwoofer via cable, and RJ45 Ethernet for a wired network connection when preferred. Wireless subwoofer connection to KEF's KC62, KC92, KF92, and Kube series subwoofers is available via the optional KW2 RX Receiver. The XIO's RCA subwoofer output means that any active subwoofer — not only KEF models — can be added to extend low-frequency performance further; the KEF KC62 is a natural partner given its compact dimensions and force-cancelling low-distortion bass character.

Control is via a touch-sensitive top panel with power, volume, mute, and source selection, an infrared remote control with a customisable favourite button, or the KEF Connect app on iOS and Android.

Who Is It For?

The XIO is the correct choice for anyone who wants a single-unit home cinema audio solution that does not ask them to accept a meaningful acoustic compromise in return for that convenience — and who wants Dolby Atmos height reproduction, genuine bass extension to 34 Hz, and high-resolution streaming capability without a separate subwoofer, surround speakers, or AV receiver. It suits living rooms where multiple speaker placement is impractical, installations where the priority is a clean, minimal system, and listeners who want the acoustic integrity of KEF's driver engineering in a format that connects directly to a television. Those who wish to add a subwoofer for additional low-frequency authority will find the KEF KC62 a natural companion — and those interested in exploring KEF's custom installation portfolio for a more architecturally integrated solution should consider the KEF Ci3160RL-THX and the wider THX-certified in-wall and in-ceiling range we stock.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The KEF XIO is available to hear at our Norwich showroom — we can demonstrate it across film and music sources and discuss how it compares to building a separate speaker and AV receiver system at a similar investment. When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
