KEF Ci5160REFM-THX

The KEF Ci5160REFM-THX is the pinnacle of KEF's custom installation loudspeaker engineering — a THX Certified Dominus in-wall loudspeaker from the Ci-R Series that represents an uncompromising transfer of Reference-series acoustic technology into the architectural domain. Hand-assembled with the same rigour as KEF's celebrated Reference floorstanding loudspeakers, the Ci5160REFM-THX carries both THX Certified Dominus certification — the highest level of THX certification in existence — and the full complement of KEF's most advanced driver technologies, including the 12th generation Uni-Q array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology. It is a loudspeaker that does not merely compete with the finest freestanding designs — it surpasses them in every dimension that matters, whilst disappearing entirely into the fabric of the room.

12th Generation Uni-Q® with MAT™

At the heart of the Ci5160REFM-THX sits KEF's 12th generation Uni-Q® driver array — the same generation of driver that powers the Reference Meta and Blade Meta floorstanding loudspeakers — incorporating a 25 mm aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 125 mm aluminium cone midrange unit. This coincident point-source geometry ensures that mid and high-range frequencies radiate from precisely the same point in space, producing a soundstage of extraordinary width, depth, and stability that no conventional multi-driver loudspeaker — architectural or freestanding — can fully replicate.

The 12th generation array brings transformative engineering advances. The tweeter gap damper has been redesigned to maximise the cavity behind the dome, creating the space necessary to accommodate the metamaterial absorber. A new ultra-low distortion midrange motor embeds a copper ring into the motor gap, minimising inductance variation with voice coil position — reducing total harmonic distortion across the midrange band and lowering thermal compression at sustained high output levels. The redesigned driver surround permits longer excursion without diffraction, and the entire Uni-Q assembly is fully decoupled from the baffle via a flexible chassis, eliminating the transmission of mechanical energy from the baffle into the driver signal path.

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT™)

Metamaterial Absorption Technology — developed with the Acoustic Metamaterials Group and first introduced on the LS50 Meta — is a precisely engineered maze-like acoustic structure mounted directly behind the tweeter dome, in which each individual channel is tuned to absorb a specific frequency of unwanted rearward radiation. Together, the channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the sound that would otherwise re-enter the signal path as distortion and coloration. The result is a treble performance of extraordinary purity and naturalness — free of the veiling and high-frequency coloration that limits even the finest conventional tweeter designs, and previously unsurpassed in a custom installation loudspeaker of any price.

Five Bass Drivers on a Massive Aluminium Baffle

The Ci5160REFM-THX deploys five 160 mm aluminium cone bass drivers — a driver complement that matches the flagship Reference 5 Meta floorstander in both quantity and quality — mounted to a massive precision-machined aluminium baffle. This baffle is the mechanical foundation of the entire design, providing the rigidly inert platform that five high-excursion drivers demand when operating at the output levels required by THX Certified Dominus certification. The aluminium baffle eliminates the resonance and structural vibration that lesser materials introduce into the signal chain, ensuring that every watt of amplifier power is converted into controlled, accurate bass output — and that the tonal character of the loudspeaker is determined entirely by its drivers and crossover.

The five-driver bass array delivers a combined piston area and motor force that enables the Ci5160REFM-THX to achieve an extraordinary combination of low-frequency extension and dynamic headroom — reaching deep into the bass register whilst maintaining the speed, control, and articulation that the Ci-R Series name demands.

THX Certified Dominus

THX Certified Dominus is the most demanding certification standard in the entire THX portfolio — exceeding even THX Ultra2 in the rigour of its performance requirements. Dominus certification is awarded only to loudspeakers that meet stringent criteria for output capability, frequency response, imaging quality, and distortion at the highest reference playback levels — criteria that go beyond the professional studio monitoring standard to encompass the most demanding custom installation cinema environments in the world. The Ci5160REFM-THX is one of a very small number of loudspeakers in existence to carry this certification, placing it at the absolute pinnacle of home cinema loudspeaker performance regardless of form factor or price.

Who Is It For?

The Ci5160REFM-THX is the correct choice for the most ambitious custom installation home cinema — where no compromise is acceptable, where the front stage must match the performance of the finest freestanding Reference-series loudspeakers, and where the acoustic footprint of the room must remain entirely invisible. It is the natural front-stage anchor for a complete Ci-R Series installation, pairing with the KEF Ci3160RL-THX for surround channels, the KEF Ci3160RLb-THX for in-wall bass, and the KEF Ci200RR-THX for overhead Atmos channels. Those wishing to compare the Ci5160REFM-THX against KEF's finest freestanding designs should also consider the KEF Blade Meta.
