KEF Reference 5 Meta

The KEF Reference 5 Meta is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker in KEF's Reference Series — a range that has set the benchmark for British speaker engineering for over five decades. It is a three-way design built around KEF's most advanced driver technologies in a cabinet that leaves nothing to compromise. At £20,000 per pair, it is a serious investment in long-term listening pleasure.

Uni-Q Driver Array with MAT

The Reference 5 Meta is built around KEF's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array, which places a 25mm aluminium dome tweeter at the acoustic centre of a 125mm midrange cone. This concentric arrangement means both drivers radiate sound from precisely the same point in space, producing a coherent, three-dimensional soundstage that a conventional design — with its physically separated drivers — cannot replicate. The tweeter uses KEF's Metamaterial Absorption Technology — MAT. MAT is a complex maze-like structure fitted to the rear of the tweeter, made up of a series of channels each individually tuned to absorb sound at a specific frequency. It eliminates the unwanted back-wave from the tweeter that would otherwise colour the midrange and treble, reducing distortion and delivering a cleaner, more transparent top end.

Bass Array

The Reference 5 Meta uses four 165mm aluminium bass drivers — two on the front and two on the rear — in a force-cancelling arrangement. This configuration dramatically reduces the cabinet vibration that a conventional bass reflex design produces, keeping the cabinet inert and allowing the midrange and tweeter to operate without mechanical interference from the bass section. The result is tighter, more articulate bass with a lower noise floor across the rest of the frequency range.

Reference-Grade Crossover

The crossover network uses components selected to the same exacting standard as KEF's flagship Blade. Precise phase alignment across both crossover points is maintained throughout the design, which contributes directly to the Reference 5 Meta's exceptional imaging and its ability to resolve low-level detail at any listening level.

Cabinet Construction

The Reference 5 Meta cabinet is built using constrained-layer damping with extensive internal bracing throughout. The front baffle is machined from a single piece of aluminium — not pressed or cast, but machined — giving the Uni-Q array an absolutely rigid, resonance-free mounting surface. The curved cabinet profile reduces internal standing waves and gives the speaker a sculptural presence in the room.

Who Is It For?

The Reference 5 Meta is for the listener who wants the best floorstanding speaker KEF make outside of the Blade and Muon — and who has the room and the amplification to do it justice. Its 89dB sensitivity and 8Ω impedance make it relatively easy to drive, but it will scale with amplifier quality in a way that few speakers at any price can match. It suits large rooms where its four-driver bass array can develop properly. If you are building a reference home cinema system, it pairs naturally with the KEF Reference 4C Meta centre channel and the KEF KC62 Subwoofer for additional bass reinforcement.

Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi

Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. KEF is one of the most important names in British speaker design, and the Reference 5 Meta represents the culmination of everything the Reference Series stands for. You can hear it at our Norwich showroom — Dave and Chris can walk you through the full Reference range and help you match amplification and room placement to get the best from it.
