KEF R2 Meta Centre Channel Speaker

The KEF R2 Meta is the centre channel loudspeaker of KEF's R Series — designed from the outset to match the R11 Meta floorstander and R3 Meta bookshelf speaker in driver technology, cabinet construction, and acoustic character, and to anchor the dialogue and centre-stage performance of a home cinema system with the same fidelity that the R Series delivers across the full frequency range. Built around the 12th generation Uni-Q® driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology and two 130 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers, the R2 Meta is compact enough for placement on a cabinet or AV rack, yet capable of the output and precision that the most dynamic film soundtracks and music demand. It is a centre channel that does not compromise the system it joins.

12th Generation Uni-Q® with MAT™

At the heart of the R2 Meta sits KEF's 12th generation Uni-Q® driver array — a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter mounted at the acoustic centre of a 125 mm aluminium cone midrange unit, forming the coincident point-source arrangement that defines KEF's loudspeaker philosophy. In a centre channel loudspeaker, this Single Apparent Source geometry is of particular acoustic importance — dialogue and centre-stage information must remain anchored precisely to the screen, and any coloration or dispersion irregularity in the centre channel will immediately undermine the coherence of the whole system. The Uni-Q® array's wide, even dispersion ensures that the R2 Meta delivers consistent tonal balance and imaging quality across the full width of the listening area — not merely for the listener in the optimal seat.

The 12th generation array incorporates KEF's Metamaterial Absorption Technology — MAT™. Developed in collaboration with the Acoustic Metamaterials Group, MAT™ is a precisely engineered maze-like structure mounted directly behind the tweeter dome. Each channel within the structure is individually tuned to absorb a specific frequency of unwanted rearward tweeter radiation — and together, the channels act as an acoustic black hole, absorbing 99% of the energy that would otherwise re-enter the signal path as distortion and coloration. The result is a treble performance of extraordinary purity and naturalness — free of the veiling and high-frequency coloration that limits conventional tweeter designs — and a dialogue clarity that was previously unsurpassed in any R Series centre channel.

The refined tweeter gap damper reduces resonance within the tweeter assembly; the Flexible Decoupling Chassis isolates the complete Uni-Q® from the mechanical energy of the bass drivers and the cabinet structure; and the enhanced crossover design and fine-tuned signal path ensure that the transition between bass, midrange, and treble is precisely managed at every listening level.

Dual Hybrid Aluminium Bass Drivers

The R2 Meta's low-frequency and lower-midrange performance is delivered by two 130 mm hybrid aluminium cone bass drivers — one either side of the Uni-Q® array in a classic three-way centre channel configuration. This symmetrical arrangement keeps the centre of the bass radiation aligned with the Uni-Q®, preserving the Single Apparent Source integrity of the complete driver complement and ensuring that off-axis tonal balance remains consistent across the listening room. The redesigned magnet system increases excursion linearity and reduces distortion across the bass register — enabling the R2 Meta to reach 67 Hz at the lower boundary of its ±3 dB frequency response, and to deliver a maximum output of 110 dB peak SPL. In a home cinema system anchored by R11 Meta floorstanders, this bass capability is more than sufficient to integrate seamlessly with the main speakers and carry the full weight of a film soundtrack without strain.

Cabinet and Versatility

At 175 × 550 × 309 mm and 15.4 kg, the R2 Meta is compact enough to sit on an AV cabinet or media unit beneath a screen without dominating the room — whilst its 550 mm width and substantial build quality give it the physical presence appropriate to a serious hi-fi component. The microfibre grille attaches magnetically and leaves no visible fixings on the baffle when removed. The R2 Meta can be used horizontally as a conventional centre channel, or deployed vertically in an LCR configuration — where all three front channels use identical R2 Meta loudspeakers — for the ultimate in front-stage tonal matching and imaging consistency. Amplifier requirements are modest: 15–200W into 4 Ω, with a sensitivity of 87 dB.

The R2 Meta is available in Black Gloss, White Gloss, and Walnut — matching the finish options of the R11 Meta and R3 Meta for a consistent visual presentation across the complete system.

Who Is It For?

The R2 Meta is the natural centre channel choice for any home cinema system built around KEF's R Series — pairing directly with the KEF R11 Meta floorstanders for a front stage of complete tonal consistency and acoustic coherence. Those building a more compact system should consider whether the R2 Meta suits their screen height and cabinet dimensions — at 175 mm tall it is designed for horizontal placement on or beneath a media unit. For those extending their system into custom installation territory, the KEF Ci3160RL-THX offers THX-certified in-wall centre channel performance for installations where a freestanding speaker is not appropriate. Adding a KEF KC62 Subwoofer to a system anchored by the R2 Meta and R11 Meta floorstanders completes a home cinema front stage of exceptional capability.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The R2 Meta is available to discuss and hear at our Norwich showroom — we can advise on placement, system matching with the R11 Meta or R3 Meta, and the best amplification and AV processing to get the most from the complete R Series front stage. When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
