KEF R11 Meta
The KEF R11 Meta is the flagship floorstanding loudspeaker of KEF's R Series — the largest, most ambitious model in a range that represents KEF's definitive statement of what is achievable at this price point. Where the R Series has always occupied the territory between KEF's Reference and entry-level loudspeakers, the R11 Meta closes that gap to a degree that was previously unsurpassed — combining the 12th generation Uni-Q® driver array with Metamaterial Absorption Technology, four 165 mm hybrid aluminium bass drivers, and a cabinet of genuine physical authority. The result is a loudspeaker that delivers the scale, dynamic capability, and low-level resolution of a Reference-series design at an R Series price — and one that rewards careful system matching with a listening experience of extraordinary completeness.
12th Generation Uni-Q® with MAT™
At the heart of the R11 Meta sits KEF's 12th generation Uni-Q® driver array — a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter mounted at the acoustic centre of a 125 mm aluminium cone midrange unit, forming the coincident point-source arrangement that has defined KEF's loudspeaker philosophy for decades. This Single Apparent Source geometry ensures that treble and midrange radiate from precisely the same point in space, producing a soundstage of exceptional width, depth, and stability — and a sweet spot that is generous enough to reward listening across a wide area of the room rather than demanding a single fixed position.
The 12th generation array brings transformative refinements over its predecessor. The tweeter gap damper has been redesigned to create the cavity space required to accommodate KEF's Metamaterial Absorption Technology — MAT™. Developed in collaboration with the Acoustic Metamaterials Group, MAT™ is a precisely engineered maze-like structure fitted directly behind the tweeter dome, each channel individually tuned to absorb a specific frequency of unwanted rearward tweeter radiation. Together, the channels act as an acoustic black hole — absorbing 99% of the energy that would otherwise re-enter the signal path as distortion and coloration. The result is a treble performance of extraordinary purity and naturalness — free of the veiling and high-frequency coloration that limits conventional tweeter designs — and a step change in low-level resolution that makes the R11 Meta sound substantially more transparent than the R11 it replaces.
The Tangerine Waveguide manages high-frequency airflow across the dome, ensuring even, controlled dispersion throughout the listening room. The refined tweeter gap damper further reduces resonance within the tweeter assembly, and the complete Uni-Q is mounted on a Decoupling Chassis — a flexible suspension that isolates the driver array from the mechanical energy of the bass drivers and the cabinet structure, keeping its operating environment as quiet and stable as possible.
Four Hybrid Aluminium Bass Drivers
The R11 Meta's low-frequency performance is delivered by four 165 mm hybrid aluminium cone bass drivers — mounted in two pairs, with two drivers above and two below the Uni-Q array, in a symmetrical arrangement that balances the mechanical forces acting on the cabinet. These drivers feature a redesigned magnet system that reduces distortion across the bass register, increasing both the linearity of excursion and the precision of transient control. The combined piston area and motor force of four drivers enables the R11 Meta to pressurise a large listening room convincingly — reaching 30 Hz at −6 dB and delivering a peak output of 113 dB — whilst retaining the agility and timing precision that distinguished the R Series from more powerful but less controlled rivals.
The port design has been refined using computational fluid dynamics to reduce turbulence at the port exit — lowering port noise at high output levels and maintaining controlled, accurate bass even when the R11 Meta is driven hard. Port bungs are included for those who prefer the tighter, faster bass alignment of a sealed cabinet in a room with challenging acoustic properties.
Cabinet Construction
The R11 Meta's cabinet employs Constrained Layer Damping — CLD — bracing throughout the internal structure. CLD bracing bonds panels together with a viscoelastic damping compound rather than conventional rigid bracing, converting mechanical energy that would otherwise cause cabinet panels to vibrate into heat at the adhesive layer. The result is a cabinet of exceptional rigidity and low resonance, providing the inert platform that four high-excursion bass drivers and the Decoupling Chassis Uni-Q array demand. The custom 5-way bi-wire and bi-amplifier binding posts are tool-less — a practical refinement that simplifies installation without compromising the electrical quality of the connection.

Who Is It For?
The R11 Meta is the correct choice for the listener who wants the full-range, large-room performance of a Reference-class floorstanding loudspeaker without the Reference-class investment. Its 90 dB sensitivity and 4 Ω nominal impedance make it a straightforward load for most capable amplifiers in the 15–300W range — though it will scale with amplification quality, and pairing it with a genuinely resolving source chain will reveal the full extent of what the 12th generation Uni-Q® with MAT™ is capable of. Those who have heard the R11 and want to understand what the Meta generation adds will find the difference in low-level resolution, soundstage stability, and treble purity immediately apparent. Those stepping up from bookshelf listening and committing to their first serious floorstander will find the R11 Meta a thoroughly convincing argument for doing so.
For those considering KEF's wider range, the KEF Blade Meta represents the ultimate expression of KEF's passive loudspeaker engineering, whilst the KEF KC62 Subwoofer can supplement the R11 Meta's already substantial bass performance for those who want to extend still further into the low-frequency register.
Buying from Martins Hi-Fi
Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.
The R11 Meta is available to hear at our Norwich showroom — we recommend bringing your own music and allowing enough time to hear it properly across a range of material. When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on this product and your whole system.
