KEF Ci3160RLb-THX
The KEF Ci3160RLb-THX is the most powerful in-wall subwoofer in KEF's Ci-R Series — a THX certified architectural bass unit that delivers the deep, theatre-filling low-frequency performance of a traditional freestanding subwoofer from within the fabric of the wall itself. Certified to both THX Ultra2 and THX Select2 standards, the Ci3160RLb-THX sets a new standard for what an in-wall subwoofer can achieve — combining extraordinary output capability with the acoustic precision that KEF's engineering heritage demands, and eliminating the physical footprint of a conventional subwoofer enclosure entirely.
Three High-Output Bass Drivers on an Aluminium Baffle
The Ci3160RLb-THX is built around three 160 mm high-output sub-bass drivers, mounted to a massive precision-machined aluminium baffle. This baffle is the mechanical foundation of the entire design — providing the rigidly inert platform that three high-excursion drivers demand when operating at the output levels required by THX Ultra2 certification. Where a plastic or composite baffle would flex and resonate under the mechanical forces generated at full output, the aluminium baffle of the Ci3160RLb-THX remains entirely stable — ensuring that every watt of amplifier power is converted into controlled bass output rather than wasted in structural vibration and coloration.
The three-driver configuration delivers a combined piston area and motor force that enables the Ci3160RLb-THX to reach 20 Hz in open-backed installation conditions — a frequency range that encompasses the full sub-sonic content of cinematic soundtracks and the deepest pedal notes of pipe organ and orchestral bass. Sensitivity is rated at 92 dB at 2.83 V at one metre, and nominal impedance is 4 Ω — figures that reflect the efficiency and load characteristics of a driver complement designed to work in close partnership with KEF's dedicated KASA500 system amplifier.
THX Ultra2 and THX Select2 Certification
The Ci3160RLb-THX carries dual THX certification — THX Ultra2 and THX Select2 — placing it among the most rigorously tested in-wall subwoofers available. THX Ultra2 certification is the highest standard available for home cinema loudspeakers, demanding that a subwoofer meet stringent criteria for output capability, frequency extension, and distortion at reference listening levels in large dedicated cinema rooms. THX Select2 extends this certification to medium-sized listening environments. Dual certification means the Ci3160RLb-THX is equally at home anchoring the bass performance of a purpose-built home cinema or a sophisticated living room installation — delivering the same reference-standard low-frequency performance in either context.
KASA500 System Amplifier — Required
The Ci3160RLb-THX must be paired with KEF's KASA500 system amplifier — a dedicated high-power amplification solution engineered specifically for the Ci-R Series. A single KASA500 is capable of powering up to two Ci3160RLb-THX units simultaneously, making it the natural choice for installations that require dual in-wall subwoofers for symmetrical bass loading or increased output capability. The KASA500 provides the amplifier power and system control necessary to realise the Ci3160RLb-THX's full performance potential — and no alternative amplifier is recommended.
Installation
The Ci3160RLb-THX is designed for installation in dry-lined stud partition walls. For best acoustic performance, the wall cavity behind the speaker should be filled with standard fibreglass insulation — this is standard practice in architectural speaker installation and significantly improves bass quality and extension. The mounting depth from the wall surface is 88.5 mm, with wall thickness accommodation between 6 mm and 40 mm. An optional rough-in frame — the RIF3160L — is available separately for new-build or renovation installations where the speaker position needs to be secured before plastering and finishing work is complete.

Who Is It For?
The Ci3160RLb-THX is the correct choice for a custom installation home cinema where in-wall bass performance at THX Ultra2 standard is required — whether as the sole subwoofer in a dedicated cinema room or as part of a dual-subwoofer configuration for symmetrical bass loading. It pairs naturally with the front-stage in-wall speakers from the same Ci-R Series, including the KEF Ci3160RL-THX and the KEF Ci5160RL-THX. For the ultimate expression of KEF's custom installation engineering, the KEF Ci5160REF-THX represents the pinnacle of the Ci-R Series front-stage range. Those considering in-ceiling surround channels alongside this subwoofer should explore the KEF Ci200RS-THX and KEF Ci200RR-THX.
