KEF Reference 1 Meta
The KEF Reference 1 Meta is a stand-mounted loudspeaker sitting at the top of KEF's Reference Series — a range that has defined British speaker engineering for decades. It is a two-way design built around KEF's most advanced driver technologies, intended for listeners who want reference-grade performance from a compact cabinet. At £9,000 per pair, it competes at the highest level of the stand-mount market.
Uni-Q Driver Array with MAT
The Reference 1 Meta is built around KEF's 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array, which places the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange cone. This concentric arrangement means both drivers share the same point in space, producing a more coherent, three-dimensional soundstage than a conventional two-way design where tweeter and midrange are physically separated. The tweeter in the Reference 1 Meta uses KEF's Metamaterial Absorption Technology — MAT for short. MAT is a maze-like structure made from a complex arrangement of channels, each tuned to absorb sound at a specific frequency. Fitted to the rear of the tweeter, it eliminates the unwanted back-wave that would otherwise colour the sound, reducing distortion and improving clarity across the top of the frequency range.
Reference-Grade Crossover
The crossover in the Reference 1 Meta uses components selected to the same standard as KEF's flagship Blade and Muon. The network is designed to maintain precise phase relationships between the drivers across the crossover point, which contributes directly to the speaker's imaging precision and low-level detail retrieval.
Cabinet Construction
The Reference 1 Meta cabinet uses a curved, constrained-layer construction with high-density bracing to minimise resonance. The front baffle is machined from a single piece of aluminium, giving a rigid, inert surface for the Uni-Q array to work from. This is not cosmetic — a rigid baffle reduces the micro-vibrations that blur transient detail.

Who Is It For?
The Reference 1 Meta is for the listener who wants genuine reference-class performance but cannot accommodate a floorstanding speaker — whether due to room size, acoustic treatment constraints, or a preference for a nearfield setup. It rewards careful amplifier matching; its 85dB sensitivity and 8Ω nominal impedance mean it will work with a wide range of amplifiers, but it will show up the differences between them clearly. Pair it with stands specifically designed for it and an amplifier with genuine current delivery, and it will outperform floorstanders at significantly higher prices.
Buying from Martin's Hi-Fi
Martin's Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. KEF is one of the most important names in British speaker design, and the Reference Series represents the culmination of that heritage. You can hear the Reference 1 Meta at our Norwich showroom — Dave and Chris can walk you through the full Reference range and help you identify the right amplification and stands for your room.
