Innuos ZEN Next-Gen

The ZEN Next-Gen is Innuos's entry point into the Next-Generation series — a music server and streamer that has been substantially rearchitected rather than incrementally updated. It sits below the ZENith Next-Gen in the range, but carries a significant proportion of the same core technology, including the new NGaN power regulation, the PreciseAudio mainboard, and full Sense 3 software. For anyone serious about the quality of their digital source, it warrants close attention.

NGaN Power Regulation — Why the Power Supply Matters

Innuos have built the ZEN Next-Gen around their new RECAP2 NGaN PSU — a Gallium Nitride regulated power stage working in combination with linear power modules. The significance here is in the impedance: Gallium Nitride regulation allows for a much lower power supply impedance than conventional approaches, which translates directly to a more transparent signal and cleaner instrument separation. Noise introduced at the power supply stage propagates through the entire digital chain; reducing it at source is one of the most effective things a manufacturer can do. This is technology that has filtered down from the NAZARÉ, and its presence in the ZEN Next-Gen is a meaningful step forward.

PreciseAudio Mainboard

Rather than adapting an off-the-shelf server board, Innuos have designed their own. The PreciseAudio mainboard is engineered specifically for low processor latency, minimal power noise, and reduced EMI emissions. Enhanced power regulators and solid capacitors are fitted as standard. The result is a foundation that contributes to audio quality rather than merely tolerating it — an important distinction at this level.

Processing and AudioCore Technology

The ZEN Next-Gen uses a new generation Intel Core i3 with four physical cores and four virtual cores. Innuos's AudioCore technology dedicates specific physical cores exclusively to audio processes — separating them from the general computing load that would otherwise introduce timing irregularities. Sixteen gigabytes of industrial-grade low-noise DDR4 RAM supports larger database caching and faster response. Low heat dissipation keeps thermal noise to a minimum during extended listening sessions.

Modular Architecture — Configure It for Your System

One of the most practically useful aspects of the ZEN Next-Gen is its modular design. It can be configured as a combined music server and streamer, as a server only, or as a streamer only — with no internal storage if preferred, or up to 16TB of SSD storage through Innuos's XSM Expandable Storage Management system. An internal NVMe PCIe drive accommodates up to 8TB, with an additional externally accessible M.2 NVMe slot providing a further 8TB.

The optional Digital Audio Output slot accepts three different modules: the PhoenixUSB Board, which regenerates and reclocks the USB signal using a high-precision 3ppb 24MHz OCXO clock; the PhoenixI2S Board, which provides a direct I2S connection to compatible DAC chips and supports up to DSD1024; or the SPDIF Board, which provides Coaxial, Optical, and AES outputs supporting PCM up to 24-bit/192kHz. Each is an upgrade that can be specified at point of purchase or added later.

Dedicated OS SSD and Storage Management

The operating system runs from a dedicated industrial-grade 3D TLC SSD with power-loss protection — separate from any music storage. This is a detail that matters: keeping the OS drive isolated reduces interference and ensures system integrity in the event of a power interruption. The XSM system manages storage across multiple drives as a single unified pool, with intelligent data protection handled through Sense.

Premium Chassis

The chassis is machined from 10mm aluminium — CNC-machined, bead-blasted, and anodised. It includes a vibration-dampened transformer platform and a Chassis Ground port connection. The construction is substantial in a way that reflects the engineering inside rather than serving as decoration.

Sense 3 Software

The ZEN Next-Gen runs Innuos Sense 3, which introduces a real-time kernel to reduce OS latency further, AudioCore process isolation, and CD ripping via external USB drives with drive-head alignment for accurate ripping. The Sense app provides a unified library combining locally stored music, NAS content, and streaming services including Qobuz, TIDAL (with TIDAL Connect and MAX resolution), Deezer, HighResAudio, and IDAGIO. Internet radio, podcast support, Radio Paradise in CD-quality FLAC, mixed playlist creation, Innuos Multiroom grouping, and UPnP are all included.

Upgradeable to ZENith Next-Gen

The modular construction means the ZEN Next-Gen can be upgraded to a ZENith Next-Gen at any point. For those who want a clear upgrade path without replacing the entire unit, this is worth factoring into the purchase decision from the outset.

Who Is It For?

The ZEN Next-Gen is for the listener who understands that the digital source is as important as the DAC or amplifier downstream — and who wants a single, well-engineered unit to handle ripping, storage, streaming, and output without compromise. It suits systems where the DAC is already capable of resolving fine detail, and where the quality of the signal feeding it has become the limiting factor. Those wanting Roon Core functionality will find it fully supported. Those who prefer to start without storage and add it later, or to begin without a modular output board and add one when budget allows, will find the architecture accommodates that approach cleanly.
