Gold Note HP-5.2 Headphone Amplifier
The Gold Note HP-5.2 is a Class A headphone amplifier built for those who take personal listening seriously. Compact in form but uncompromising in engineering, it is designed to extract the full performance potential from any headphone — from sensitive in-ear monitors through to demanding high-impedance over-ear models. With up to 5W of output power, a fully balanced dual/mono design, and an analogue signal path built around discrete Class A components, the HP-5.2 brings a level of refinement to headphone listening that few dedicated amplifiers at this size can match. A comprehensive suite of analogue controls — including Crossfeed, Harman Options, Superflat, variable Gain, Damping Factor, and L/R Balance — means the amplifier can be precisely optimised for the specific characteristics of each pair of headphones rather than offering a one-size-fits-all presentation.

Technology & Design
The HP-5.2 is built around a fully balanced dual/mono architecture using discrete Class A components throughout the signal path — an approach that prioritises sonic purity over convenience of manufacture. The analogue signal path is kept as direct and uncompromised as possible, with the extensive control section operating without introducing noise or colouration into the audio chain.
The onboard SABRE ES9023 DAC handles digital sources via USB-C (PCM up to 48kHz) and Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX HD 24-bit, allowing high-resolution wireless streaming from a phone, tablet, or computer without meaningful loss of quality. The Bluetooth output is equally capable, making the HP-5.2 a practical hub for wireless headphones as well as wired.
What makes the HP-5.2 particularly well considered is its analogue control section. Crossfeed — adjustable across four settings — introduces a controlled degree of channel blending to replicate the natural acoustic crosstalk of loudspeaker listening, reducing the artificial stereo width that can make headphone listening fatiguing over time. The Harman Options and Superflat EQ settings allow further voicing adjustments, while Damping Factor selection, variable Gain, and L/R Balance provide the fine-tuning necessary to get the best from any specific headphone.
The Listening Experience
The HP-5.2 presents music with the coherence and tonal density expected of Class A amplification — a quality that is immediately apparent when moving between headphones of different character and impedance. Bass is controlled and well-defined, the midrange has genuine body, and high frequencies are resolved clearly without becoming fatiguing. The Crossfeed control is more useful in practice than it might appear on paper: at its most natural settings it takes the edge off the slightly artificial quality of conventional headphone stereo presentation, lending recordings a sense of space and depth that makes extended listening far more comfortable.
Heritage
Gold Note is based in Florence, Italy, and has earned a strong reputation in specialist audio for products that combine careful engineering with musical results. The HP-5.2 sits within a broader ecosystem of Gold Note components — including the PH-5.2 phono stage and the PSX-5.2 external power supply — and is designed to integrate naturally with the rest of the range.
