Gold Note HP-5.2 Headphone Amplifier

The Gold Note HP-5.2 is among the most completely realised headphone amplifiers available at its price — a fully balanced, dual/mono Class A design from Florence that brings the engineering seriousness of a high-end integrated amplifier to personal listening. Compact in form but uncompromising in execution, the HP-5.2 delivers up to 5W of Class A output power across four headphone outputs, an analogue signal path built entirely from discrete components, and a control section of extraordinary depth — making it equally capable of driving a sensitive in-ear monitor or a demanding high-impedance over-ear headphone with the same authority and tonal refinement.

Class A Dual/Mono Architecture

The HP-5.2 is built around a fully balanced dual/mono circuit topology — the left and right channels are kept entirely separate throughout the signal path, sharing no components, no ground references, no compromises. Class A operation ensures the output stage conducts continuously regardless of signal level, eliminating crossover distortion entirely and producing the tonal density and harmonic coherence that set Class A amplification apart. The discrete component implementation goes further still: where lesser designs use integrated circuit op-amps to reduce cost and complexity, the HP-5.2 builds its gain stages from individual transistors and passive components, giving the designer direct control over every element of the signal path and producing a character that is unmistakably analogue in texture and weight.

Four Headphone Outputs

Four outputs — 3.5mm, 6.3mm, 4.4mm balanced Pentaconn, and 4-pin XLR — ensure that any headphone in current production can be connected in its preferred termination, with the fully balanced outputs delivering the additional common-mode noise rejection and channel separation that the HP-5.2's dual/mono architecture makes possible.

Analogue Control Section

The HP-5.2's control capabilities go well beyond a volume knob and gain switch. Four-stage Crossfeed control introduces a precisely calibrated degree of channel blending — replicating the natural acoustic crosstalk of loudspeaker listening and reducing the artificial stereo width that makes conventional headphone presentation fatiguing over extended sessions. Harman Options and Superflat EQ settings allow further voicing adjustment to suit specific headphone characters. Variable Gain, Damping Factor selection, and L/R Balance complete a suite of controls that allows the HP-5.2 to be precisely configured for any headphone rather than offering a generic, one-size-fits-all presentation. All adjustments are made through a touchscreen display without interrupting or degrading the analogue signal path.

Digital Sources and Bluetooth

The onboard SABRE ES9023 DAC accepts digital input via USB-C — handling PCM up to 48kHz — and Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX HD 24-bit for high-resolution wireless streaming from a phone, tablet, or computer. The Bluetooth capability extends to output as well, making the HP-5.2 a practical hub for wireless headphones alongside its wired connections.

The PSX-5.2 Upgrade

The optional PSX-5.2 external inductive power supply removes the influence of the internal power supply from the signal path entirely — tightening dynamics, lowering the noise floor, and bringing a greater sense of composure and authority to the HP-5.2's already refined presentation. For those building a serious personal audio system, the PSX-5.2 represents a meaningful step forward.

Who Is It For?

The Gold Note HP-5.2 is built for the serious personal audio listener who demands the same engineering standards from their headphone system as from their main rig. It pairs naturally with the broader Gold Note ecosystem — including the Gold Note PH-10 phono stage and the Gold Note PA-10 power amplifier — and suits any listener who wants a single, flexible hub for both wired and wireless headphone listening at the highest level.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

You can hear the Gold Note HP-5.2 in our Norwich showroom, matched to a range of headphones across different impedances and sensitivities, to find the configuration and voicing that suits your listening best. When you get in touch, you'll be speaking with Dave, Chris and Tim — experienced specialists who can advise on the HP-5.2 and your whole system.
