Gold Note DS-5.2 Streaming DAC

The Gold Note DS-5.2 is a compact, all-in-one digital source component that combines a high-resolution streaming DAC, line preamplifier, and headphone amplifier in a single black anodised aluminium chassis. Built around the AKM AK4493 DAC chip — capable of handling PCM up to 32-bit/768kHz and DSD up to DSD512 — it brings genuine high-end digital conversion to a versatile and practical package. Streaming is handled via the GN Control app for iOS and Android, with native support for Tidal, Qobuz, Deezer, Spotify, and vTuner, alongside Tidal Connect, Roon Ready certification, Airplay 2, and full UPnP/DLNA compatibility. Connectivity is equally thorough, with wired and wireless network inputs, Bluetooth 5.3 aptX HD, HDMI eARC, optical, coaxial, USB-A, and USB-C all present on the rear panel.

Technology & Design

The DS-5.2's most distinctive feature is Gold Note's Chameleon technology — a system unique to the brand that allows the user to manually adjust the behaviour of the DAC chip itself. Rather than fixing the digital-to-analogue conversion characteristics at the factory, Chameleon allows fine-tuning of filter and conversion parameters to better suit specific genres, recordings, or personal taste. It is a genuinely useful tool in practice, and one that sets the DS-5.2 apart from streaming DACs that offer no such flexibility.

The integrated line preamplifier section means the DS-5.2 can connect directly to a power amplifier, simplifying system architecture considerably for those who stream as their primary source. Both RCA and XLR outputs are provided at 2Vrms, suitable for the majority of power amplifier inputs. The headphone amplifier handles an exceptionally wide impedance range — from sensitive IEMs at 8Ω through to high-impedance over-ear designs above 600Ω — making it a practical solution for desktop listening as well as main system use.

Wireless connectivity covers Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX HD 24-bit in both directions, Wi-Fi, and Airplay 2, while wired options include Ethernet, USB-C asynchronous, USB-A, coaxial, optical, and HDMI eARC. Firmware updates are delivered over the air, keeping the DS-5.2 current without requiring physical access to the unit.

The Listening Experience

The AKM AK4493 is a well-regarded DAC chip known for a natural, unhyperdetailed presentation — one that suits extended listening rather than impressing on first audition and fatiguing shortly afterwards. Through the DS-5.2, high-resolution files and well-mastered streaming sources carry genuine weight and dimensionality, with a frequency response measured flat from 20Hz to 20kHz ±0.1dB. The Chameleon technology adds a further layer of refinement: adjusting DAC behaviour between, say, a dense orchestral recording and a sparse acoustic performance makes a more meaningful difference than the usual catalogue of digital filter options found on competing products.

Heritage

Gold Note is based in Florence, Italy, and produces a closely integrated range of components under the 'il suono italiano' philosophy. The DS-5.2 is designed to work naturally within a broader Gold Note system — pairing with the HP-5.2 headphone amplifier or PH-5.2 phono stage, for instance — though it integrates equally well into any well-matched system. The optional PSX-5.2 external inductive power supply is a worthwhile consideration for those wishing to extract the full potential of the digital and analogue stages.
