Fyne Audio F500SP Standmount Speaker

The F500SP is the entry point into Fyne Audio's Special Production series — a UK-built 2-way standmount built around a 150mm IsoFlare point-source driver and a downfiring port with BassTrax Tractrix diffuser. Sensitivity is 90dB, frequency response extends from 42Hz to 34kHz, and the recommended amplifier power range of 30–120W makes it practical with a broad range of amplification. The Special Production concept brings driver, crossover, and bass tuning expertise from the F700 and F1 series into the more compact F500 cabinet format, tuned by Technical Director Dr Paul Mills and hand-built at Fyne's Scottish factory. At £1,799.99 per pair, it sits in a section of the market where driver engineering matters enormously, and on that count the F500SP has a serious answer.

The F500 SP — Special Production Series

The Special Production series exists to bring engineering from Fyne Audio's high-end ranges into a more accessible format without compromising the driver technology at the heart of each design. The F500SP uses the same IsoFlare driver geometry, FyneFlute surround, magnesium dome compression tweeter, BassTrax port system, and Cryo-Lite crossover treatment found in the more expensive SP, F700, and F1 series models. The cabinet is finished to a standard that reflects its position in the range: anodised aluminium plinth, diamond-cut aluminium driver trim, and a deep gloss walnut veneer as one of four standard finish options.

IsoFlare Driver Technology

The IsoFlare driver combines the bass/midrange cone and the high-frequency compression tweeter on a shared axis — the tweeter fires from the centre of the bass/midrange driver — so both drivers radiate sound from the same point in space. This point-source behaviour means the time relationship between bass, mid, and treble is consistent across the listening area, and off-axis performance is substantially better than a conventional two-driver arrangement where the tweeter sits physically above the bass/midrange unit.

In the F500SP, the IsoFlare driver uses a 150mm multi-fibre cone with a FyneFlute roll surround. FyneFlute's geometry reduces cone resonances at the driver termination, improving clarity through the upper bass and lower midrange. The tweeter is a 25mm magnesium dome compression driver with a neodymium magnet system.

BassTrax and Port System

The F500SP uses a downfiring port that connects to a BassTrax Tractrix diffuser built into the plinth. The Tractrix profile maintains a consistent expanding wavefront as bass energy leaves the port, reducing reflections and smoothing the transition between port output and room. The practical result is a speaker that is less sensitive to floor-boundary effects and easier to place than a conventional rear-ported design — reaching 42Hz from a cabinet of this size is a direct consequence of this loading approach.

Crossover and Connections

The crossover divides at 1.7kHz: 2nd order low-pass on the bass/midrange, 1st order high-pass on the tweeter. It is a bi-wire passive design with Cryo-Lite treatment. The connection panel is a five-terminal design — four for bi-wiring, plus a fifth terminal to earth the driver chassis, eliminating RF interference conducted through the amplifier or cables.

Stands

Fyne Audio make the FS6 stand specifically for the F500SP. It is a heavy steel and aluminium design — 611mm tall (excluding spikes), with a 160 × 230mm top plate that matches the F500SP's footprint. The central column is mass-loadable for additional damping.

Who Is It For?

The F500SP suits a listener who wants a proper standmount — not a budget compromise but a speaker built around a serious driver technology — in a room where a floorstander is too large or too much. The 90dB sensitivity and 8Ω impedance make it easy to drive; 30 watts is enough for a smaller room, and the 120W upper limit gives headroom for more powerful amplification. The BassTrax system means it is less fussy about placement than most speakers at this size, which is a real practical advantage in a living room.

It is a natural first step into the Fyne Audio range for a buyer who wants to understand what IsoFlare technology sounds like before considering the larger F501SP floorstander or the F701SP above it. For those interested in the F5S at a lower price point, see the F5S. A bespoke colour finish is available via the F500SP RAL Classic Colour option, and extended HF performance can be added to any SP series system with the Fyne Audio SuperTrax super tweeter.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind. The F500SP is available to hear in our Norwich showroom — call ahead and we will have it set up for you. Dave and Chris can advise on stand matching, system pairing, and whether the F500SP or a Fyne Audio floorstander is the right fit for your room.
