Acustica Applicata Polifemo: The Revolutionary Helmholtz Resonator

The Polifemo is Acustica Applicata's most technically ambitious product — a large-format Helmholtz resonator designed to address the lowest and most problematic room modes in serious listening environments. At £7,000, it is a statement piece in every sense: acoustically, aesthetically, and in terms of the engineering behind it.

How It Works

A Helmholtz resonator works by trapping air in a cavity connected to the room via a narrow aperture. When sound at the resonant frequency enters the aperture, the air inside the cavity oscillates and absorbs the energy — converting acoustic energy into heat through friction. The Polifemo uses this principle at scale, with a tunable aperture that allows you to target the specific low-frequency modes causing problems in your room.

Unlike broadband absorbers, which treat a wide range of frequencies indiscriminately and can deaden a room's character, the Polifemo acts surgically. It removes the energy at problem frequencies without touching the frequencies on either side. The result is a bass response that is tighter and more accurate, and a midrange and treble that benefit from the reduction in low-frequency masking.

Construction and Finish

The Polifemo is a substantial installation — its size is a direct consequence of the physics involved. Treating very low frequencies requires large volumes of air, and the Polifemo's dimensions reflect this honestly. The build quality is consistent with Acustica Applicata's wider range: Italian craftsmanship, durable materials, and a finish that holds its own in a serious listening room.

Who Is It For?

The Polifemo is for listeners who have already explored the rest of the Acustica Applicata range and are ready to address the final, most stubborn layer of room problems. It is also the right starting point for anyone building a dedicated listening room from scratch and wanting to treat bass modes before they become a habit you learn to live with.

It works in combination with the full DaaD range. The DaaD 4 handles resonances above 50Hz and early front reflections, while the Volcano addresses modes from 25Hz upwards. The Halifax completes a comprehensive treatment scheme for larger rooms.

For those earlier in their room treatment journey, the Eco DAAD is a sensible place to start.

Buying from Martins Hi-Fi

Martins Hi-Fi has been in Norwich since 1968. Elizabeth Gould runs the business today, and we stock only brands we have heard properly and stand behind.

The Polifemo is not a product you buy without a conversation. Dave and Chris can discuss your room's specific dimensions and problems, help you understand whether the Polifemo is the right solution, and advise on how it fits into a broader treatment scheme. We are happy to take the time to get this right.
